Abstract
Asweallknow,notwolanguagesintheworldareidenticalineveryway,eachcultureisunique.Sothereareessentialdifferencesbetweeneasterncultureandwesternculture.Butforthingsincommon,nothingmatterswhethertoexchangeornot,whereasforsomethingdifferent,itisnecessarytoexchange.Culturaldifferencesindifferentnationsnotonlycausethenecessityofculturalexchange,butalsoformcommunicativebarriers.Inresult,theculturaldifferencesbetweenEnglishandChinesemaygiverisetomisunderstandingsorevencommunicationblockininterculturalcommunication.Andthereisnodoubtthattranslationisakindofinterculturalcommunication,whichbuildsabridgeamongdifferentcultures.So,intheprocessoftranslation,itiscrucialandimperativetoadmitandunderstandtheculturaldifferencesthatleadtheuntranslatabilityandlessthebarrierintheprocessoftranslating,whichstrengthensrelationshipsamongdifferentcountries.MythesismainlyaimsatdiscussingtheculturaluntranslatabilitybetweenEnglishandChinesecausedbythedietaryculturaldifferences,businessculturaldifferences,anddiscoveringthemostproperwaytotranslatethesourcecultureandpresenttheessenceoftheforeignculture.

文化差异与不可译译性
摘要:
众所周知,任何语言不可能在每个特征上都相似,以及任何文化都具有它的独特性和唯一性。
但凡两事物之间,只要有共同之处,他们之间就存在着交流,即使有不同之处,还是有交流的必要。
因此,不同国家的文化差异不仅导致文化交流的必要性,但也阻碍交流。
因此,中英文化差异可能引起误解甚至阻碍跨文化交际。
毫无疑问,在现代国际交流活动中,翻译作为国际交往与活动的重要工具显得愈为重要。
因此,在翻译过程中,承认翻译的不可译性并不意味翻译的完全不可译,以及理解中英文化存在的差异显得尤为重要,只有这样,才能将原文与译文实现完美而自然的对等翻译。
本文旨在探讨饮食文化差异和商业文化差异所造成的汉语和英语之间不可译性并用最适当的方式翻译原文化和体现外国文化的特征。

Whatisculturaldifference?
Aculturaldifferenceisanysystematicdifferencebetweentwocultureswhichhindersmutualunderstandingorrelations.Suchdifferencesincludethevalues,behavior,education,andcustomsoftherespectivecultures.Thatistosay,eachnationhasitspeculiarsocialbackground,culturalconnotationsandthinkingpatternssothattherearemanyculturaldifferencesbetweentwocountries.Itisacknowledgedthatlanguageistheproductandcarrierofthecultureand withtheextensiveofinternationalcommunicationandcultureexchange,thetaskoftranslationbecomesmoreand moreimportant.Andwhatisuntranslatability?
Untranslatabilityisapropertyofatextorofanyutterance,inonelanguage,forwhichnoequivalenttextorutterancecanbefoundinanotherlanguagewhentranslated.Today,withthedevelopmentoftechnology,informationandcapitalaretranscendinggeographicalboundariesandreshapingtherelationshipsbetweenthemarketplace,statesandcitizens.Communicationbetweendifferentcountriesbecomesmoreandmorefrequent.
Inevitably,translationbecomesaveryimportantmediumforculturalexchangebetweenpeopleusingdifferentlanguages.Butbecauseoftheculturaldifferencesandlanguageparticularitywhichleadstotheuntranslatability,itisoneofthemostimportanttasksfromtranslatorsandtranslationresearchersviewingproblemsoftranslationfromtheangleofculturalexchangeinordertoincreasethedegreeofculturalexchangeachievedbytranslationasmuchaspossible.Inconsequence,itiscrucialandimperativetoadmitandunderstandtheculturaldifferencesthatleadtheuntranslatabilityanddiscoverthemostproperwaytotranslatethesourcecultureandpresenttheessenceoftheforeignculturetolessthebarrierintheprocessoftranslating,whichstrengthensrelationshipsamongdifferentcountries.
1Untranslatabilityindietaryculturaldifferences
Dietisabsolutelynecessaryinthelifeofmankind,andevenintheexistenceordevelopment.BecauseofthedifferencesbetweenChineseandwesternculturaltraditions,theChineseandwesterndietaryculturesaredifferentindietaryconcepts,targets,andtableculture.Westudythesedifferencesandthenfindoutthepointsthatcanbedigested,inordertofacilitatethecommunicationaboutculturesbetweenChinaandthewest.ThesedifferencesondietaryculturebetweenEnglishandChinesecoincidewiththeirrespectivelifestyleandtheirrhythmoflife.
Forexample,Chinesecuisineiswidelyknownandenjoyedinallfourcornersoftheworld.WhocouldnotconfesstolongingforafavoriteChinesedish?
ButthereisoneinterestingconceptconcerningChinesefoodwhichisalmostunheardofinthewest,andwhichisbecomingincreasinglyignoredbytheyouthoftheChinese—theancientcustomof“食补”(tonicfood).Inchina,theelderly,weak,andyoungcanalsobenefitgreatlyfrom“食补”,especiallyduringthewinter.Somefoods,suchasgoatmeatandspinach,are“hot”(热性)whileothers,suchasChinesecabbageandradish,areseenas”cold”(凉性).Iftranslating“食补”into“tonicfood(滋补的食物)”inEnglish,itwillmakethewesternverypuzzledinresultoftheirlackofconceptoftonicfood.
