ThemostfamoushyperpolyglotwasGiuseppeCasparMezzofanti,a19thcenturyItaliancardinal,whowassaidtospeak39languages.Thisclaimsoundsabsurd.If_you_assume_each_language_had_20,000_words,_Mezzofanti_would_have_to_learn_a_word_a_minute,_six_hours_a_day,_for_eleven_years—an_impossible_task.ButMezzofantiwastestedbycritics,andtheywereallimpressed.

Orarehyperpolyglotsjustordinarypeoplewithordinarybrainswhomanagetodosomethingextraordinarythroughhardwork?
TheUSlinguistStephenKrashenbelievesthatoutstandinglanguagelearnersjustworkharderatitandthentheyacquireunusuallystronglanguageability.Asanexample,hementionsaHungarianwomanwhoworkedasaninterpreterduringthe20thcentury.Whenshewas86,shecouldspeak16languagesandwasstillworkingonlearningnewlanguages.Shesaidshelearnedthemmostlyonherown,readingfictionorworkingthroughdictionariesortextbooks.
Someresearchersarguetothecontrary.Theybelievethatthereissuchathingasatalentforlearninglanguages.Inthe1930s,aGermanscientistexaminedpartsofthepreservedbrainofahyperpolyglotnamedEmilKrebs,whocouldspeak60languagesfluently.ThescientistfoundthattheareaofKrebs'braincalledBroca'sarea,whichisassociatedwithlanguage,lookeddifferentfromtheBroca'sareainthebrainsofmenwhospeakonlyonelanguage.However,westilldon'tknowifKrebswasbornwithabrainreadytolearndozensoflanguagesorifhisbrainadaptedtothedemandsheputonit.
Althoughitisstillnotclearwhethertheabilitytolearnmanylanguagesisinborn,there'snodoubtthatjustaboutallofuscanacquireskillsinasecond,third,orevenfourthlanguagebyputtingourmindtoit.
