FortheirstudyneuroscientistJuanToroandhiscolleaguesatBarcelona'sScientificParktested64adultmalerats.TheyusedDutchandJapanesebecausetheselanguageswereusedinearlier,similartests,andbecausetheyareverydifferentfromoneanotherinuseofwords,rhythmandstructure.
TheratsweretrainedtorespondtoeitherDutchorJapaneseusingfoodasareward.Thentheywereseparatedintofourgroups—onethatheardeachlanguagespokenbyanative,onethatheardsynthesized()speech,onethatheardsentencesreadineitherlanguagebydifferentspeakersandafourththatheardthelanguagesplayedbackwards.RatsrewardedforrespondingtoJapanesedidnotrespondtoDutchandratstrainedtorecognizeDutchdidnotrespondtospokenJapanese.TheratscouldnottellapartJapaneseorDutchplayedbackwards.
Resultsshowedthatratscoulddiscriminatenaturalsentenceswhenutteredbyasinglespeakerandnotwhenutteredbydifferentones,norcouldtheydistinguishthelanguageswhenspokenbydifferentpeople.Humannewbornshavethesameproblem,althoughtamarinsC)caneasilytelllanguagesapartevenwhenspokenbydifferentpeople.
Itwasstrikingtofindthatratscantrackcertaininformationthatseemstobesoimportantinlanguagedevelopmentinhumans.
