However,onlyaroundhalfofthosewhocelebrateChristmasviewitasareligiousholiday,whileone-thirdseeitasaculturalcelebration,ratherthanoneoffaith.Religionisfarlesscentraltoyoungpeople’sobservancesofChristmas,thesurveyfound,withonly39percentofthoseaged18-29viewingitasareligiousholiday,comparedto66percentofthoseaged65andolder.
InanattempttoexplorethechangingnatureofChristmastraditions,thePewsurveyalsoaskeditsadultparticipantshowtheyremembercelebratingtheholidayaschildren,comparedtothewaytheycelebrateitnow.Awhopping86percentsaidtheyplantocelebrateChristmaswithfamilyandfriends,andthesamepercentagesaytheyplantogivegiftstofriendsandfamily.Around9in10adultssaidtheseactivitieswerepartoftheirholidaytraditionswhentheywerechildren.Accordingtothesurvey,8outofevery10AmericansplantoputupaChristmastreethisyear,comparedto92percentwhosaidtheytypicallyputupaChristmastreewhentheywerechildren.
Otherholidaytraditionsrememberedfromchildhooddidn’tfareaswell,however.While81percentofthosesurveyedsaidtheirfamiliestypicallysentholidaycardsduringtheirchildhood,only65percentsaidtheyplannedtodosothisyear.Only16percentsaidtheywouldgocaroling(唱圣诞颂歌),comparedto36percentwhosaidtheycaroledduringtheirchildhood.
