Music
Therearetwoimportantkindsofmusicintheworld—oneiswrittendownandtheotherisnot.Manypeopleearntheirlivingbywritingmusic.TheywritesongsforpopstarsandmusicforfilmsandTVplays.Theyusuallywriteexactinstructions(指示;说明)howthemusicistobeplayed.
Folkmusichasbeenpasseddownfromonegenerationtoanother.Atfirstitwasneverwrittendown.Peoplelearntthesongsfromtheirfamilies,relatives(亲戚;亲属),neighborsandfriendsinthesamevillage.Thesesongswereaboutcountrylife,theseasons,animalsandplants,andaboutloveandsadnessinpeople'slives.
Earlyperformersusedtolearnhundredsofsongsbyheart.Atfestivalstheyusedtoactandsinginpraiseofheroeswholivedlongago.Thiswasatatimewhentherewasnoradio,TVorcinema.Manyofthecountrypeoplecouldneitherreadnorwrite.Inthiswaystorieswerepassedonfromonepersontoanother.Thiscontin-
uesinsomecountrieseventoday.
Insomepartsoftheworldnowadays,youoftenseemusiciansperforminginthestreetstopassers-by(过路人).Theyputacaponthegroundinfrontofthem,sothatpeoplewholikethemusiccandropcoinsintoit.
InAfricamostmusicisfolkmusic.Itplaysanimportantpartinpeople'slives,especiallyatfestivalsandweddings,whenpeopledanceallnightlong.
Indianmusicisnotwrittendown.Thereisabasicpattern(模式)ofnoteswhichthemusiciansfollow.Butalotofmodernmusicisalsowritten.Indiaproducesmorefilmsthananyothercountryintheworld.Itproducesmusicals(音乐喜剧),too,thatis,filmswithmusic,andmillionsofrecordsaresoldeveryyear.
JazzwasbornintheUSAaround1890.ItcamefromworksongssungbyblackpeopleandhaditsrootsinAfrica.Jazzstarteddevelopinginthe1920sinthesouthernstates.Soonitwasplayedbywhitemusicians,too,andreachedotherpartsoftheUSA.
