1.结合课题任务情况,查阅文献资料,撰写1000-2000个左右英文单词的文献综述
Surveyofstudies
GeorgeBernardShawwasan Irish playwright andaco-founderofthe LondonSchoolofEconomics.Hewrotemanykindsofworks,buthismaintalentwasfor drama,andhewroteover50plays.AndMrs.Warren'sProfessionisoneofthemostfamousplays.
Mrs.Warren'sProfessioniswrittenin1893,andfirstperformedinLondonin1902.ThisstorycentersontherelationshipbetweenMrsWarrenandherdaughter,Vivie.Mrs.Warren,aformerprostituteandcurrentbrothelowner,isdescribedas"agenialandfairlypresentableoldblackguardofawoman."Vivie,anintelligentandpragmaticyoungwomanwhojustgraduatedfromcollege,hascomehometogetacquaintedwithhermotherforthefirsttimeinherlife.TheplayfocusesonhowtheirrelationshipchangeswhenVivieknowswhathermotherdoesforaliving.
AsafamousrealistdramawriterandthewinneroftheNobelPrizeforliterature,BernardShawhasbeenconcernedbyworldwideliterarycriticsanddramaresearchers.Ofcourse,BernardShawhimselfalsoevaluatedhisplays.In1902,hepublishedaspeechcalledTheAuthor’sApology.Inthisspeech,hestressed:
“Mrs.Warren’sProfessionisnomeretheorem,butaplayofinstinctsandtemperamentsinconflictwitheachotherandwithaflintysocialproblemthatneveryieldsaninchtomeresentiment.”Aftertheplaycameout,itbecamethehotissue,andthereweremanyresearchersholdsthedifferenteventhenegativeopinions.
Duringthistime,thefamousbiographerFrankHarrismadeacomment:
“Mrs.Warren’sProfessionisnodoubtthemostuniquedramas-mainlyshowedthespecialcharacteristicsofShaw,becausethisplayisweakandstronglikeShaw.”However,therewerealsosometotallynegativeopinions.In1905,theBritaingovernmentissuedanofficialannouncement,anditseverelycriticized:
“Thewholestoryoftheplay,theatmospheresurroundingit,theincidents,thepersonalitiesofthecharacterarewhollyimmoralanddegenerate.TheonlywaysuccessfullytoexpurgateMrs.Warren’sProfessionistocutthewholeplayout…Theplayisaninsulttodecencybecause-Itdefendsimmorality.”
Inthewesterncountries,thesystematicstudyaboutShaw’splaysstartedfrom1920s.ChineseresearchesonShawwerealittlelater;however,ShawandhisworksreceivedwarmwelcomeinChina.FromtheMay4thMovement,manyfamouswriterstudiedShawnotonlyabouthisworksbutalsoabouthimself,includingHushi,Maodun,Luxunandsoon.Butfrom1980to2011,theresearchesaboutthisplayjustpresentsevenarticles,including:
AnAnalysisofMrs.Warren’sProfessionbyWangYige(2007),TheImageofWomeninMrs.Warren’sProfessionbyYeNina(2008),AResearchintoBernardShaw’sOutlookonSocietyfrom“MajorBarbara”and“MrsWarren’sProfession”byZhangMingai(2008),RevelationofFiguresRelationandCharactersbyWayofConversationAnalysisinMrsWarren’sCareerbyWangXingwei(2009),TheAnalysisoftheImageofWomeninMrs.Warren’sProfessionbyZhaohui(2010),TheAnalysisofMrs.Warren’sProfessionfromthePerspectiveofFeminismbyXucuiandAFeministReadingofMrs.Warren’sProfessionbyHuangWenlu(2011).Amongthesearticles,onlyRevelationofFiguresRelationandCharactersbyWayofConversationAnalysisinMrsWarren’sCareeranalyzefromthedramaticdialoguetheviewofsocietyofShaw,especiallytheviewofmoney.TherestsixarticlesallfocusedontheimageoftwowomeninMrs.Warren’sProfession.TheAnalysisofMrs.Warren’sProfessionfromthePerspectiveofFeminism,whichfromtheperspectiveoffeminismattemptstoconductanin-depthanalysisofthetwoheroines,reflectingthefemininerebelliousspiritinapatriarchalsocietyaswellastheevilofcapitalisticsociety.InthearticleofAFeministReadingofMrs.Warren’sProfession,theauthorHuangWenluwrote:
“thispaperattemptstodiscussShaw’sacuteawarenessofVictorianwomen’ssexualandeconomicoppression,andhispenetratinganalysisoftheissueofprostitutioninparticular,andtoexcavatehisearlyfeministstancereflectedinMrs.Warren’sProfessionintheperspectiveofMarxistFeminism.Then,itwillanalyzethedeepestrootofwomen’sdualoppression-thecapitalistmodeofproductionanditsavariceformaximalprofit.FinallyittriestodefendMrs.Warrenagainstthelongtimedistortionofherimageas“animmoralwoman”,withtheconclusionthatGeorgeBernardShawcanbeviewedinawayas“thefatheroffeministliterarycriticism”becauseofhiscontributiontothisliteraryschool.

“Thisthesisadoptsthethematicstudyandthecomparativestudyasitsanalyticalapproaches,aimingtointerpretthemoralityinwomen’schoiceofprofessionsinMrs.Warren’sProfessionthroughfeminism.Thisthesisexposestheshacklesandoppressionofthedouble-standardizedVictorianmoralityonwomen.Italsoprobestheevilsofthepatriarchalsocietywhichisdisguisedasbeingdecent.Moreover,thethesispenetratesthetwoheroines’moralitiesintheirchoiceofprofessions.”
Tosumup,therearemaybesomeresearchesIhaven’tmentioned,butinthewhole,thestudyofthisplayinournationarenotenough.From1980tonowadays,only20articlesspecializeinGeorgeBernardShawandhisplayMrs.Warren’sProfession.Moreover,thesearticles’researchperspectivesaresingleandlackofdetailedanalysis.ThescholarstendtodiscussthisplayjustontheimagesofMrs.WarrenandherdaughterVivie.Thisthesisistoanalyzetheplayfromtheperspectiveoffeminism.
Thesisstatement
NomatterinChinaorwesterncountries,theresearchonShawhasbeenlastedforalongtime.Inthewesterncountries,thesystematicstudyaboutShaw’splaysstartedfrom1920s.ChineseresearchesonShawwerealittlelater;however,ShawandhisworksreceivedwarmwelcomeinChina.FromtheperspectiveoffeminismrereadingtheworksofShawprovidesanewangletostudyShaw.
Thisthesisistobecarriedoutasfollows.Asawhole,ithassixchapters.Thefirstchapterofthisthesisisanintroductiontothewholethesis,whichpresentstheintroductionaboutGeorgeBernardShaw,backgroundofthestory.Then,thesecondchapterisaLiteratureReview,includingthestudiesonMrs.Warren’sProfessionandwhatisfeminism.AndthethirdchapterisVivie’simageintheviewofFeminism,andinthischaptertherearethreeparts:
