Gershwin’slastandperhapsgreatestworkwas“PorgyandBess,”afolkoperaadaptedfromtheplay“Porgy”byDuBoseHeyward.Themusicofthisproductionisbroad,dramatic,andpowerful.“PorgyandBess”containsmusicthatmaytrulybecalledgreat.Itmayserveasafittingmonumentforagreatcreativemusicalgenius.Whenwehearthemusicof“PorgyandBess,”onecanonlyguesstowhatheightsGershwinwouldhaverisenifhiscareerhadnotbeencutshortin1937.
