TheScientificMethod
‘Hypotheses,’saidMedawarin1964,‘areimaginativeandinspirationalincharacter’;theyare‘adventuresofthemind’.HewasarguinginfavorofthepositiontakenbyKarlPopperintheLogicofScientificDiscovery(1972,3rdedition)thatthenatureofscientificmethodishypothetico-deductiveandnot,asisgenerallybelieved,inductive.
Itisessentialthatyou,asanintendingresearcher,understandthedifferencebetweenthesetwointerpretationsoftheresearchprocesssothatyoudonotbecomediscouragedorbegintosufferfromafeelingof‘cheating’ornotgoingaboutittherightway.
Themythofscientificmethodisthatitisinductive;thattheformulationofscientifictheorystartswiththebasic,rawevidenceofthesenses-simple,unbiased,unprejudicedobservation.Outofthesesensorydata–commonlyreferredtoas‘facts’–generalizationswillform.Themythisthatfromadisorderlyarrayoffactualinformationanorderly,relevanttheorywillsomehowemerge.However,thestartingpointofinductionisanimpossibleone.
