Setupin2012,thebankistheworld’sfirstbankforkids.Tobecomeamember,akidhastobringinatleast5kilogramsofsolidwasteandsetasavingsgoal.Onceaccepted,allbank“partners”arerequiredtodepositatleastoneadditionalkilogramofrecyclablesonamonthlybasisandobserveotherrequirements,suchasattendingfinancialeducationandenvironmentalmanagementworkshops.
Thewasteaccumulatedissoldtolocalrecyclingcompanies,who,thankstoJose’sefforts,payahigher-than-marketrateforeverythingbroughtinbythebankmembers.Themoneyreceivedisplacedinthepersonalaccountwheretheycollectuntilthesavingsgoalisreached.Theaccountholdercanthenwithdrawthemoney,orchoosetoleaveitandcontinuetogrowforabiggertarget.“Atthebeginning,myteachersthoughtIwascrazyorthatachildcouldnotundertakethistypeofproject,”Joserecalls.“Theydidnotunderstandthatwearenotthefutureofthecountrybutitspresent.Luckily,Ihadthesupportoftheschoolheadmasterandanassistantinmyclass.”
Theboy’seffortspaidoff,andby2013,thebankhadover200members,whobroughtinonetonofrecyclablewaste.Today,theeco-bank,whichnowhasthesupportofseverallocalinstitutions,boaststeneducationalcenters.Theyaredesignedtoteachtheover3,000students,aged10to18,tobecomefinanciallyindependent,usetheirmoneywisely,andhelptheenvironment.
Notsurprisingly,Jose’seffortshaveearnedhimseveralnationalandinternationalawards.OnNovember20,2018,JosewonChildren’sClimatePrize,whichcomeswithamedaland$5,500inprizemoneyandisgiventoachildoryouthwhohasaccomplishedanextraordinaryachievementfortheclimateorenvironment.
