Oneimportantstageinachild’sgrowthiscertainlythedevelopmentofaconscience,whichislinkedtotheabilitytotellrightfromwrong.Thisskillcomeswithtimeandgoodparenting,andmyfirmconvictionisthatpunishmentdoesnothavemuchofaroletoplayinthis.ThereforeIhavetodisagreealmostentirelywiththegivenpunishment.

Tohelpachildlearnthedifferencebetweenrightandwrong,teachersandparentsshouldfirstlyprovidegoodrolemodelingintheirownbehaviour.Afterthat,ifsanctionsareneeded,thepunishmentshouldnotbeofaphysicalnature,asthatmerelysendsthemessagethatitisacceptableforlargerpeopletohitsmallerones–anoutcomewhichmaywellresultinthechildstartingtobullyothers.Norshouldthepunishmentbeinanywaycruel.
Rather,teachersandparentscanuseavarietyofmethodstodisciplinetheiryoungcharges,suchasdetention,withdrawalofprivileges,andtime-out.Makingthepunishmentfitthecrimeisausefulnotion,whichwouldseechildrenbeingmadetopickuprubbishtheyhavedropped,cleanupgraffititheyhavedrawn,orapologisetosomeonetheyhavehurt.Inthesewaysresponsibilityisdevelopedinthechild,whichleadstomuchbetterfuturebehaviourthandoespunishment.

Traditionally,childrenhavebegunstudyingforeignlanguagesatsecondaryschool,butintroducingthemearlierisrecommendedbysomeeducationalists.Thispolicyhasbeenadoptedbysomeeducationalauthoritiesorindividualschools,withbothpositiveandnegativeoutcomes.
Theobviousargumentinitsfavouristhatyoungchildrenpickuplanguagesmuchmoreeasilythanteenagers.Theirbrainsarestillprogrammedtoacquiretheirmothertongue,whichfacilitateslearninganotherlanguage,andunlikeadolescents,theyarenotinhibitedbyself-consciousness.
Thegreaterflexibilityoftheprimarytimetableallowsformorefrequent,shortersessionsandforaplay-centredapproach,thusmaintaininglearners’enthusiasmandprogress.Theircommandofthelanguageinlaterlifewillbenefitfromthisearlyexposure,whilelearningotherlanguagessubsequentlywillbeeasierforthem.Theymayalsogainabetterunderstandingofothercultures.
Thereare,however,somedisadvantages.Primaryschoolteachersaregeneralists,andmaynothavethenecessarylanguageskillsthemselves.Ifspecialistshavetobebroughtintodeliverthesesessions,theflexibilityreferredtoaboveisdiminished.Ifprimarylanguageteachingisnotstandardised,secondaryschoolscouldbefacedwithagreatvarietyoflevelsindifferentlanguageswithintheirintake,resultinginaclassroomexperiencewhichundoestheearliergains.Thereisnoadvantageifenthusiasticprimarypupilsbecomedemotivatedassoonastheychangeschools.However,theseissuescanbeaddressedstrategicallywithinthepolicyadopted.
Anythingwhichencourageslanguagelearningbenefitssocietyculturallyandeconomically,andearlyexposuretolanguagelearningcontributestothis.Youngchildren’sinnateabilitiesshouldbeharnessedtomakethesebenefitsmoreachievable.
4.Somepeoplesaythatthebestwaytoimprovepublichealthisbyincreasingthenumberofsportsfacilities.Others,however,saythatthiswouldhavelittleeffectonpublichealthandthatothermeasuresarerequired.Discussbothviewsandgiveyourownopinion.(C9T3)
Aproblemofmodernsocietiesisthedeclininglevelofhealthinthegeneralpopulation,withconflictingviewsonhowtotacklethisworryingtrend.Onepossiblesolutionistoprovidemoresportsfacilitiestoencourageamoreactivelifestyle.
Advocatesofthisbelievethattoday’ssedentarylifestyleandstressfulworkingconditionsmeanthatphysicalactivityisnolongerpartofeitherourworkorourleisuretime.Iftherewereeasy-to-reachlocalsportscentres,wewouldbemorelikelytomakeexercisearegularpartofourlives,ratherthanjustcollapsinginfrontofascreeneveryevening.Thevarietyofsportsthatcouldbeofferedwouldcaterforallages,levelsoffitnessandinterests:
thosewithpainfulmemoriesofPEatschoolmightbehappierintheswimmingpoolthanonthefootballpitch.
However,theremaybebetterwaysoftacklingthisproblem.Interestinsportisnotuniversal,andadditionalfacilitiesmightsimplyattractthealreadyfit,notthosewhomostneedthem.Physicalactivitycouldbeencouragedrelativelycheaply,forexamplebyinstallingexerciseequipmentinparks,asmylocalcouncilhaddone.Thishastheaddedbenefitthatparentsandchildrenoftenusethemtogetherjustforfun,whichdevelopsapositiveattitudetoexerciseatanearlyage.
Aswellasphysicalactivity,hightaxpenaltiescouldbeimposedonhigh-fatfoodproducts,tobaccoandalcohol,asexcessiveconsumptionofanyofthesecontributestopoorhealth.Evenimprovingpublictransportwouldhelp:
ittakeslongertowalktothebusstopthantothecar.
Inmyopinion,focusingonsportsfacilitiesistoonarrowanapproachandwouldnothavethedesiredresults.Peopleshouldbeencouragednotonlytobemorephysicallyactivebutalsotoadoptahealthierlifestyleingeneral.
5.Somepeoplethinkthatparentsshouldteachchildrenhowtobegoodmembersofsociety.Others,however,believethatschoolistheplacetolearnthis.Discussboththeseviewsandgiveyourownopinion.(C8T1)
Achild’seducationhasneverbeenaboutlearninginformationandbasicskillsonly.Ithasalwaysincludedteachingthenextgenerationhowtobegoodmembersofsociety.Therefore,thiscannotbetheresponsibilityoftheparentsalone.
Inordertobeagoodmemberofanysocietytheindividualmustrespectandobeytherulesoftheircommunityandsharetheirvalues.Educatingchildrentounderstandtheneedtoobeyrulesandrespectothersalwaysbeginsinthehomeandiswidelythoughttobetheresponsibilityofparents.Theywillcertainlybethefirsttohelpchildrenlearnwhatisimportantinlife,howtheyareexpectedtobehaveandwhatroletheywillplayintheirworld.
However,learningtounderstandandsharethevaluesystemofawholesocietycannotbeachievedjustinthehome.Onceachildgoestoschool,theyareenteringawidercommunitywhereteachersandpeerswillhavejustasmuchinfluenceastheirparentsdoathome.Atschool,childrenwillexperienceworkingandlivingwithpeoplefromawholevarietyofbackgroundsfromthewidersociety.Thisexperienceshouldteachthemhowtoco-operatewitheachotherandhowtocontributetothelifeoftheircommunity.
Buttobeavaluablememberofanycommunityisnotlikelearningasimpleskill.Itissomethingthatanindividualgoesonlearningthroughoutlifeanditistheresponsibilityofeverymemberofasocietytotakeresponsibilityforhelpingtheyoungergenerationtobecome
