Nearlyaquarter-centuryafteraGermanboytossedamessageinabottleoffashipintheBalticSea,he’sreceivedananswer.
A13-year-oldRussian,DaniilKorotkikh,waswalkingwithhisparentsonabeachwhenhesawsomethingglitteringlyinginthesand.

“AtfirstIdidn’tbelieveit,”UesbecktoldtheAPaboutgettingtheresponsefromKorotkikh.Infact,hebarelyrememberedthetripatall;hisfatheractuallywrotetheletter.

Today,manypeoplearestarvingtodeath.Thereisashortageoffoodandtheavailablefoodistooexpensiveforhungrypeopletobuy.Therefore,theygowithoutfood,oreachdayhaveonlyoneortwosmallmealslackingthenecessaryvitaminstomaintaingoodhealth.

Acollegeeducationisnotjustpreparationforacareer,however.Inadditiontotakingcoursesintheirmajorfieldofstudy,studentsenrollinelectivecourses.Theymaytakeclassesthathelpthemunderstandmoreaboutpeople,nature,government,orthearts.Well-roundedpeoplearelikelytobebettercitizens,betterparentsandmoreinteresingandinterestedindividuals.
Althoughtwo-thirdsofAmericanhighschoolgraduatesgoontostudyincollege,recenthighschoolgraduatesnolongerdominatethecollegecampuses.Adultsofallagesreturntotheclassroom,eitherfornewvocationalskillsorforpersonalgrowth.In1966,forexample,almost20%ofAmericancollegestudentswereoverage35.Some500,000collegestudentsareover50.AmericanfaithinthevalueofeducationisexemplifiedbytherisingnumberofAmericanswhohaveatleastabachelor’sdegree.Almostone-quarterofAmericansoverage25arecollegegraduates.Collegeattendanceisnotreservedforthewealthyandtheacademicallytalented.Itisavailabletoanyonewhowantstogo.Rightnowabout15millionstudentsaretakingadvantageoftheopportunity.Forthosenotacademicallypreparedtohandlecollege-levelwork,about80%ofundergraduateschoolsofferremedial(sometimescalleddevelopmental)classesinreading,writing,andmath.
