Perhapsunsurprisingly,thestudyalsofoundthatyoungpeoplewithmorematerialisticvalueswerelesslikelytoengageinreducedconsumption.Thisgroupdid,however,engagewithbuyinggreenactivities.ResearcherSabrinaHelmsuggeststhatthismaybebecausebuyinggreenisstillbuyingsoitstillsatisfiesthematerialistsurgetoaccumulatenewitems.Thesepeoplearecalled‘greenmaterialists’.
However,greenmaterialistsmuststilldealwiththesameconsumption-relatedstressesasaveragematerialists.Ifyoubuyandownalotofstuff,ittakesupalotofheadspace.Youhavetoworryabouthowtopayforit,andyouhavetomanageallthestuff,worryingabouthowtokeepitsafeandhowtokeepitorganized.AsHelmnotes,“Thekeyistoreduceconsumptionandnotjustbuygreenstuff.Havinglessandbuyinglesscanactuallymakeusmoresatisfiedandhappier.”
