TheoraclebonescriptofthelateShangappearspictographic,asdoesitscontemporary,theShangwritingonbronzes.Theearliestoraclebonescriptappearsevenmoresothanexamplesfromlateintheperiod.ComparingoraclebonescripttobothShangandearlyWesternZhouperiodwritingonbronzes,oraclebonescriptisclearlygreatlysimplified;thisisthoughttobeduetothedifficultyofcarvingonthehardandbonysurfaces.ThemoredetailedandmorepictorialstyleofthebronzegraphsisthusthoughttobemorerepresentativeoftypicalShangwriting(aswouldhavenormallyoccurredonbamboobooks)thantheoraclebonescriptforms,anditisthistypicalstylewhichcontinuedtoevolveintotheZhouperiodwritingandthenintothesealscriptoftheQinstateinthelateZhouperiod.
