Thisassignmentisaproblem-based,interdisciplinaryprojectbasedonthecurriculumcoveredinthefirstfivesemestersoftheLogisticsManagementcourse.
ExamProjectWorkRules
Theassignmentistobepreparedstrictlyindividuallyandshoulddealwiththespecificproblemsorissuesoutlinedinthecaseprovided.
Theworkloadisexpectedtobeapproximately40hours.
Youshouldbepreparedtodrawuponsupplementaryliterature,mediacoverage,websites,andotherrelevantmaterialprovidinganinsightintohowotherfirmshavetackledsimilarsituations.

1.Background
Establishedin1900,DISAIndustriesA/S(DISA)istodayawell-establishedandwell-reputedcompany.Thecompanyinitiallymanufacturedmotorcyclesandweapons,butproductionwaslatershiftedtoincludeavarietyofproducts,includingpetrolpumps.
Sincethe1960’s,DISAhasfocusedondevelopingandsellingequipmenttofoundries,andtodayDISAisoneoftheworld’sleadingsuppliersofequipmenttothisbranch.DISAhasproductionfacilitiesinDenmark,theCzechRepublic,ChinaandIndia,andhassalesofficesinfurthereightcountries.ProductioninDenmarkisbasedinthecityofCopenhagen.
DISAsellsitsproductsglobally.Appendix2givesanindicationoftheproductssoldinvariouspartsoftheworld.
DISAwasinlate2008takenoverbyMid-EuropeanPartners,aninternationalcapitalfundwhichalsoownsoneofDISA’smaincompetitors-Wheeloperator.Inthe1½yearssincethetakeover,DISA’smanagementandemployeeshavenoticedonlyminorchanges,althoughMid-EuropeanPartnershasrecentlyannouncedthatdemandsforhigherproductivityandprofitsarepending.SomeofDISA’smanagersareconcernedthateconomicandmarketconditionscouldpointtoamergerofWheeloperatorandDISA,althoughthispossibilityhasnotbeenaddressedactivelybyDISA’smanagementteam.

2.Productionandproducts
Productionissplit,withmouldingmachinesmakingsandmouldsbeingproduced(assembled)inCopenhagen,equipmentforsand-blastingfoundrygoodsbeingproducedintheCzechRepublic,andequipmentforprocessingsandformoulds(sandmixers)aswellasmoresimpleformsofmouldingmachinesbeingproducedinIndia.

Coordinationbetweenthefourproductionsitescontinuestobeachallenge.Onadailybasis,informationtendstoflowrelativelysmoothly,andcommunicationissufficient.Inthecaseofthelargeturnkeyprojects,however,orincaseswherespecificcustomerrequirementsleadtospecialprocessesanddemands,thereareoftenmisunderstandingsandsubsequenterrors.ItisinparticulartheproductionunitinIndiawhichoftenfailstomeetspecifieddeliverydeadlinesorliveuptotherequiredquality.

Althoughthemachinebelongstoaspecificproductfamily,itisalwayssuppliedincustomer-specifiedversions..
ADISA231ismadeofapprox.3,500differentcomponents,ofwhichapprox.1,500are”DISA-specific”,i.e.theyaremanufacturedexpresslyfortheindividualmachinebasedondrawingsand/orspecifications.

Roughly20%ofthecomponentsinaDISAmouldingmachinearealsoavailableasspareparts.
AllmachinesareassembledinDenmark.
Intheproductionofamachine,DISAusescomponentsfromapprox.250differentsuppliers,mainlyfromDenmark,Germany,theCzechRepublic,Poland,Sweden,EnglandandChina.Allinall,DISA-Denmarkusesroughly475differentsuppliers.
Approximately30%ofall”DISA-specific”componentsareproducedbyDISAitself,eitherinDenmarkorintheCzechRepublic.AlargepartofthesecomponentsrequirespecialrawmaterialsintheformofspeciallymanufacturedplatesorrodsinaDISA-specificalloy,oralternativelyintheformofspeciallymouldedpartswhichDISAordersfromselectedfoundriesinGermany,theCzechRepublicorDenmark.
Inordertoreducecosts,DISAhasmovedmostofitsinternalproductionfromDenmarktotheCzechRepublic,sothatthemajorityofthecomponentsareproducedtherebutareassembledintomouldingmachinesinDenmark.
Anumberofproductsrequirespecialprocessesduringproduction,e.g.hardening,polishingandchromium-plating,whichcanonlybedonebyselectedsuppliersinGermanyandDenmark.
