Whileit’svirtuallyimpossibletomakestudentslimitalldistractionsinclassorout,Schmidtsaidteachersandparentscanencourageyouthstodevelopaninternallocusofcontrol(内控点).
Researchersfoundthatmediamultitaskingduringschoolworkdisturbsstudents’attentionandworkingmemory.Studentsmayunderstandlessandhavedifficultyrecallingwhattheyhavelearnedandapplyingitinnewcontexts.Theirreadingcomprehension,note-takingability,testperformanceandgradepointaveragesalldecrease,accordingtothestudiesSchmidtreviewed.
Someresearcherssuggestthatmobiledevicescanworsenaformofsocialanxietycalledthe“fearofmissingout”thatforcespeopletointerrupttheirstudiesandworkprojectsconstantlytoreadandrespondtosocialmediapostsandmessages,negativelyaffectingtheirperformance.Whenworkingontheprojectsthatrequirelastingconcentration,Schmidtsaidintentionallyremovingirrelevantdevicesfromtheirworkspacescanhelppeoplelimitdistractionsandresisttheurgetorespondtoeverybuzzorpingsentbytheirphone.
