CoolEditGuide

1.Introduction

CoolEditisasoundmanipulationprogramthatallowsyoutoopen,createorrecordnewsoundfilesandeditthem.YoucanuseCoolEdittorecordyourownmusic,voiceorotheraudio,editit,mixitwithotheraudioormusicalparts,touchitup,andaddeffects.

ThisguidegivesyouaconciseintroductiontoCoolEdit'sbasicfeaturesandsoundeditingcapabilities.Formoreassistanceinworkingwithsoundfiles,suchasmixingorpublishingsoundontheweb,refertotheElectronicResourceCenter'sAudioResourcepage,orconsulttheDMCstaff.

2.BasicNavigationinCoolEdit

CoolEditisdesignedforuser-friendlinesswhilecontainingavarietyofdifferentfeaturesforsoundediting.ThereareseveralbasiccomponentsthatyouwillbeusinginCoolEdit:

2.1WaveformDisplay

Thisisthemainwindowwhereyouraudiofilesaredisplayedforediting.Youraudioappearsintheshapeofawaveform.

2.2DisplayRangeBar

Thisindicateswhichpartoftheentirewaveformiscurrentlybeingviewedinthewaveformdisplay.Whenyouzoominonyourwaveform,thebarwillbecomesmallerinsize,asyouareviewingasmallerportionofyourentireaudiofile.

2.3TransportToolbar

ThisiswhereyouaccessbasicaudiofunctionsinCoolEdit.Theyareasfollows:

2.4TimeandAmplitudeRulers

Thetimerulerisonthebottomofthewaveformdisplay.Theamplitude（intensity）ruleristotherightofthewaveformdisplay.

2.5ZoomControls

Thezoomcontrolsallowyouzoomineitherhorizontally（magnifiestime）orvertically（magnifiesamplitude）withrespecttoyourwaveform.

TimeDisplayFields

Theseareusefulwhenselectingandsplicingaudio.TheSeltimedisplayfieldsshowthetimeatwhichyourselectionbeginsandendsaswellasthetotaltimeoftheselection.TheViewtimefieldsshowthebeginning,ending,andtotaltimeofthepartofthewaveformcurrentlyintheWaveformDisplay.

3.WorkingwithAudioFiles

Torecordanewfile:

•electNewfromtheFilemenu

•TheNewWaveformdialogboxwillappear,promptingyouforasamplerate,channel,andbitresolution.Ifyouareunsureofwhattouse,choose44100,stereo,and16-bit.ThesearethesettingsforCD-qualityaudio,whichisroughlycapableofproducingthefullrangeofhumanhearing.However,alwayschoosefilesbasedonyourneedsforsizeandquality.Stereofiles（leftandrightchannels）takeuptwicethespaceofmonofiles.

•Tobeginrecording,setupyourrecordingmaterials,suchasinsertingaCDintotheCDdriveorpreparingyourmicrophone.SeethePCAudiohelpsheetformorespecificinformationaboutmakingconnectionstothecomputer.

•HittheRecordbutton

•Startwhateveraudioitisyouwanttorecord.Forexample,clickonPlay

inCoolEdit'sCDplayercontrols

orbeginspeakingintoyourmicrophone,etc.

•Whenyouhavefinishedrecording,pressStop

.Yourwaveformisnowreadyforediting.

Toopenanexistingaudiofile:

•GotoFile>Open

•Chooseyourfilebybrowsingandselectingyourdesiredfile.SupportedaudioformatsforCoolEditareasfollows:

.WAV,.AU,.MP3,.PCM,.RM,.IFF,.SVX,.AIF,.SND,.TXT,.VOX,.DWD,.VOC

•ClickOpen.Yourselectedaudiofilewillbedisplayedinthewaveformdisplay.

UsingtheUndofeature:

•CoolEditretainsbackupcopiesofyoursoundfileasyoueditsoyoucanundoeacheditthatyouperform.Thisenablesyoutotravelbacktopreviousstatesoftheaudiofile,withouthavingtoworryaboutdestroyingtheoriginalaudiofile.

•Tousetheundofeature,justgototheEditmenuandselectUndo.

Toremovemultipleedits,clickonUndoagain.Youreditsarenotfinalizeduntilyousaveandclosetheaudiofile.

4.MakingSelections

Selectingistheessentialtoolyouwillbeusinginordertoedityoursoundfiles.

Forbasicselection:

•Placethecursoratthepointinyourwaveformwhereyouwouldliketobegintheselectionandthenleft-clickanddragtotherighttohighlightyourselection.

•Holddowntherightmousebuttonanddragtoeithersidetoextendyourselection.

•Toadjustyourselectionbysinglepixels,usetherightandleftarrowkeys.

•YoucanalsomakeaselectionbydoubleclickingontheSelTimeDisplayFieldsandenteringvaluesfortime.

Fine-TuningyourSelection:

•Usethezoomtools

tomagnifythewaveformdisplay.Fromhereyouhavegreatercontroloverwhatspecificaudioisselected.

ZeroCrossingadjuststhebeginningandendpointsofaselectiontothenearestplacewherethewaveformcrossesthecenterline.Thismakesforseamlesstransitionswhencuttingandpasting.ThezerocrossingcommandsarefoundunderEdit>ZeroCrossings.

FindBeats,alsoundertheEditmenu,allowsyoutodefineaselectionbasedontheboundariesofmusicalbeats.

5.EditingSound

Tocut,copyandpastesound:

•UsetheEditmenuorthetoolbar

toCut,CopyandPasteselectionsofsound.

•YoucanusemultipleclipboardsforgreaterversatilityinworkingwithyourselectionsbyusingSetCurrentClipboard.

•TheMixPaste

commandmixestheaudiodataontheclipboardstartingattheinsertionpoint.Thisallowsforsmoothertransitionsintotheaudiofile.YoucanexperimentwiththesettingsintheMixPastedialogboxtofindthebestoptionforyourneeds.

Todeleteorinsertsilence:

•Silenceisdefinedasanyaudiobelowagiventhresholdforagiventimeperiod.

•Todeletesilenceinanaudiofile,selectpartorallofyourwaveform.ThengotoEdit>DeleteSilencetodefineyourthresholds.ClickOKtodeletethesilence.

•Toconvertaselectiontosilence,selectthepartofthewaveformyouwouldliketosilenceandgotoTransform>Silence.

•Toaddsilencetoanaudiofiles,selectyourinsertionpoint,thenchooseGenerate>Silenceandsetatime.Thiswillincreasethetotaltimeofyouraudiofile.

SpecialEffects

YoucanaddspecialeffectstoselectionsofaudiobyusingtheTransformmenu.Hereareafewoptionsyoumightfinduseful:

•Amplitudechangesthevolumeofsoundatdifferentpointsinyouraudiofile.

•DelayEffectsaddseffectslikeecho,reverb,andflangertosimulateanacousticspaceforyoursound.

•NoiseReductionreducesunwantedbackgroundnoisesuchastapehissormicrophonebackgroundnoise.

•Special>BrainwaveSynchronizercanproducestereofilesthatwillputthelistenerintoanydesiredstateofawareness.

6.ExportingyourSound

WhenexportingtoMP3,realaudio,oranyotherfileformat:

•Whenyouhavefinishedediting,gotoFile>SaveAs.

•SpecifythefileformatyouwishtosaveasintheSaveasTypefield.

•ClickSave.
