Abstract
Gamma-bandoscillations(roughly30–100 Hz)inhumanandanimalEEGhavereceivedconsiderableattentioninthepastduetotheircorrelationswithcognitiveprocesses.Here,wewanttosketchhowsomeofthehighercognitivefunctionscanbeexplainedbymemoryprocesseswhichareknowntomodulategammaactivity.Especially,thefunctionofbindingtogetherthemultiplefeaturesofaperceivedobjectrequiresacomparisonwithcontentsstoredinmemory.Inaddition,wereviewrecentfindingsabouttheactualbehavioralrelevanceofhumangamma-bandactivity.Interestingly,rathersimplemodelsofspikingneuronsarenotonlyabletogenerateoscillatoryactivitywithinthegamma-bandrange,butevenshowmodulationsoftheseoscillationsinlinewithfindingsfromhumanexperiments.

Abstract
AlthoughmuchresearchhasnowaccumulatedonthedominanceofEnglishinworldscience,attentiontothespecificrealityofSouthernEuropeancountrieshasbeencomparativelyscarce.ThispaperintendstopartlyredressthisimbalancebyreportingonsurveydatagatheredattheUniversityofSantiagodeCompostela,Spain.Datawerecollectedbymeansofa25-itempostalquestionnairesenttotheresearchstaffof25(1/3)oftheUniversity'sdepartments.Atotalof213questionnaireswerereturned(24.94%returnrate).Generally,findingsindicatethatEnglishclearlyplaysalesserrolethaninotherinstitutionspreviouslyinvestigated,thatthelocallanguagesarestillthedefaultchoiceformostfunctionsandthatthereisalocalizedbutsignificantdemandforotherforeignlanguagesaswell.WhilesomegroupsofrespondentsalreadyestimatetheircurrentEnglishwritingcompetencetobesufficient,moststaffarekeenlyawareofanincreasingpressuretoimprovetheirEnglish-speakingskillsandoftheirdeficitsinthisarea.Finally,meansavailableintheinstitutiontomeetthestaff'sEnglishneedsarecomparativelyscarce,whichislikelytoplacetheminadifficultpositionvis-à-visothermore‘privileged’groupsofNNSscholars,particularlyinEurope.

Abstract
Persistentelevatedneuronalactivityhasbeenidentifiedastheneuronalcorrelateofworkingmemory.Itisgenerallyassumedintheliteratureandincomputationalandtheoreticalmodelsofworkingmemorythatmemory-cellactivityisstableandreplicable;however,thisassumptionmaybeanartifactoftheaveragingofdatacollectedacrosstrials,andneedsexperimentalverification.Inthisstudy,weintroduceaclassificationschemetocharacterizethefiringfrequencytrendsofcellsrecordedfromthecortexofmonkeysduringperformanceofworkingmemorytasks.Weexaminethefrequencystatisticsandvariabilityoffiringduringbaselineandmemoryperiods.Wealsostudythebehaviorofcellsonindividualtrialsandacrosstrials,andexplorethestabilityofcellularfiringduringthememoryperiod.Wefindthatcellsfromdifferentfiring-trendclassespossessmarkedlydifferentstatistics.Wealsofindthatindividualcellsshowsubstantialvariabilityintheirfiringbehavioracrosstrials,andthatfiringfrequencyalsovariesmarkedlyoverthecourseofasingletrial.Finally,theaveragefrequencydistributioniswider,themagnitudeofthefrequencyincreasesfrombaselinetomemorysmaller,andthemagnitudeoffrequencydecreaseslargerthanisgenerallyassumed.Theseresultsmayserveasaguideintheevaluationofcurrenttheoriesofthecorticalmechanismsofworkingmemory.
