Asachild,TedTurnerlivedaverylonelylife,oftenseparatedfromhisfamily.DuringWorldWarⅡ,hisfatherservedintheNavy.EdTurnertookhiswifeanddaughterwithhimsotheycouldlivenearbybutlefthis6yearoldsonbehindinaboardingschoolinCincinnati,Ohio.WhenTedTurnerwasinthefifthgrade,hisfatherenrolledhiminamilitaryacademy.EventhoughTurnerhadfriendsatschool,itdidn’tmakeupfortheabsenceofhisparentsandsister.EventuallyTedTurnerenrolledatBrownUniversityinProvidence,RhodeIsland.Heattendedcollegeoffandon,becameinvolvedinsailboatracing,andbecameamemberoftheU.S.CoastGuardforawhile.Inhisearlytwenties,hebecamegeneralmanagerofoneofhisfather’sbranchoffices—theTurnerAdvertisingCompanyinMacon,Georgia.
Twoyearslaterafterhisfather’ssuicide,TedTurnertookoverthecompany.Hesoondiscoveredthathewasmoreskilledthanhisfatherinmanagingthebusiness.Duringthenexttwentyyears,TedTurnerworkedhardtoaccumulateenoughpowerandmoneytofulfillhisfather’sdream.
Reflectingonhisfather’sdeath,however,TedTurnerrealizedthatitwasdangeroustoputtoomuchemphasisonmaterialpossessions.Hedecidedtousehishardearnedinfluencetoservethepublic.
Concernedabouttheenvironment,TedTurnerestablishedtheBetterWorldSocietyin1985.Thepurposeofthisorganizationwastoproducedocumentariestoeducatepeopleaboutpollution,hunger,andthedangerofbuildingweaponsofmassdestruction.In1986TurnerbegansponsoringtheGoodwillGamestopromoteworldpeace.TheTurnerTomorrowAwardswerecreatedtoencouragewritersandthinkerstofocustheirattentiononsolvingworldproblems.TheTurnerFamilyFoundationwasestablishedin1992.
