Amongothercharityefforts,PartonwasinspiredtointroducetheBuddyProgramafterseeingthealarmingdropoutrateinherhometownofSevierville,Tennessee,in1990.Thatyear34%ofschoolkidsdroppedoutofhighschool—adecisiontheyreachedaroundfifthorsixthgrade.ThefiguresweresoshockingthatPartondecidedtoinspirekidswithhernewprogram.So,inthesameyear,sheinvitedthefifthandsixthgraderstoheramusementpark,Dollywood.Shegatheredthepupilsandaskedthemtopairupwithafriendaspartofamotivatingbuddysystem.Ifbothchildrenwentontograduate,shesaidshewouldofferthembotha$500checkasareward.Thatyearthepercentageofkidsabandoningtheireducationdroppedtoanunbelievable6%,andcontinuestobearoundthatratetoday.

GoodnewsisthatKopechek’steamhasdevelopedamethodofpreservingbloodsoitcanbestoredinadehydrated(脱水的)stateatroomtemperature.Todoso,theyturnedtoasugarcalledtrehalose(海藻糖),whichisacommoningredientindonuts(甜甜圈).Trehaloseisintendedtohelpmakethemlookfreshevenwhentheyaremonthsold,andyouwouldn’tknowthedifference.
Theresearcherschosetrehalosebecause,innature,it’smadebyanimalslikeseamonkeys—famousfortheirabilitytosurvivedehydration.“Sotheseanimalscandryoutcompletelyforalongtimeandthenberehydratedandresumenormalfunction.Sowewantedtousethetrehaloseproducedbytheseorganismsandapplythattopreservingbloodcellsinadriedstate.”
Butfirst,theresearchershadtogettrehaloseintobloodcells.Toachievethis,theydrilledtemporaryholesinthecellmembranes(细胞膜).Andtheyneedtohavesufficienttrehaloseonboththeinsideandtheoutsideofthecellinordertosurvivethedehydrationandrehydrationprocess.Atthatpoint,thebloodcouldbedriedandmadeintoapowder.“Andthenwecanrehydratethebloodandhaveitreturnbacktonormal.”
