Abstract:
CharlesDickensiswildlyrecognizedasthepreeminentrealisticnovelistofVictorianageandamajorfigureintheworldliterature.OnlyShakespeare,MarkTwain,andperhapsJaneAustencancomparewithhimintermsoftheirabilitytoholdtheattentionofbothascholarlyandgeneralaudience.OliverTwistisCharlesDickens’sfirstfullycraftednovel.BasedontheanalysisofOliverTwist,thethesistendstodiscusshiswritingstyleandlanguagecharacteristics.Thenarratoristhethirdpersonomniscient,depictingthevariousscenesofthelowerpeople’slifeinBritaininthe19thcentury.Ingeneratingthestory,heusedhisrichimaginationwithmarvelousdexteritytocreatecountlesscoincidenceswithintheplot;thesecoincidencesindicatethatDickensisanoptimisticandromantichumanitarianwhoheldtheconceptthatgoodisrewardedwithgood,andevilwithevil.MeanwhileDickenswasgoodatthecharacter-portrayal,suchashisbest-depictedcharacterOliverTwist.Dickensisalsofamousforthedepictionofthosehorribleandgrotesquecharacters.Heputsthetypicalcharactersinthetypicalsurroundingstomakethestorycomplicated,unexpectedandexciting.Dickensisageniusoflanguage.Hemobilizesalltheartistictechniquestomakethelanguageunique,especiallythroughtheboardhumorandpenetratingsatire,heurgespeopleto“callatearfulsmile,”andletyou“laugh”tofindadeepphilosophicalthinking,hintofhelplessnessandrealisticsorrow,whatfollowsisthespiritualenrichmentandpurification.

CharlesDickenswasaprominentcriticalrealistinthe19thcenturyinBritain.OliverTwistwasthefirsttimethatheledreadersintoarealbutterriblelifeofunderworld.ThisnovelwasavividpictureandCharlesDickenswasanexcellentrealist.
Dickenscarriedthegoodtraditionsofrealismnovelssince18thcenturyofEnglandandalsodevelopedit.Hecreatedhisuniquetechniqueandformedhisownstyle.Dickens’worksaxeveryimportantinEnglishliteraryhistory,theyestablishedthebaseofcriticalrealismandhadeffectuponthedevelopmentofthewholeEuropeanrealismnovels.Manyexpertsandscholarshavedoneresearchaboutthecreativeideasofcriticalrealism,theanti-Semitism,thechild’spointofview,thelovestories,thesocialsignificanceandotheraspectsinOliverTwist.Theauthorwillhaveabriefanalysisofthestyleandlanguageinthisnovel.

Thereareanumberofnovelistsbetweenthoseconservativepoetsandproseinmid-19thinEngland.Theyhadaworldofsympathyforthemiseriesandastrongfeelingforlathepoorlaboringmasses.Theycriedfloutloudagainstsocialwrong.Theyhavebeenknownascriticalofoverthrowingtheexistingsocialorderthatinthisway,theycouldestablishanewone.ThegreatestofthecriticalrealistswasCharlesDickens;hewasbornin1982,atPortsmouth,thesonofunpracticalandimprovidentgovernmentnavyclerk.Asalittleboy,CharlesDickenswasexceptionallybrightandarticulate,andwasoftenaskedtoperformbeforepeople.Theboy’sschoolingwasslightandirregular,buthereadmuchfiction,especiallyseventeenthandeighteenthcenturyauthors.Butunfortunatelyattheageof12,youngCharlesDickenshadtoworkintheundergroundcellofashoeblackingfactory.Althoughhewasthereonlyforhalfayear,thisexperienceofhischildhoodleftsuchadeepimpressiononhismindthatitbecamearecurringsubjectinhisnovels.Whentheallkindsofpeople,andhisexperiencethereprovidedhimwithaninexhaustiblesourceofhiscreativework,anditmayevidentlytracednosmallpartofintensesympathywiththeoppressedpoor,especiallywithhelplesschildren,whichissoprominentinhisnovels.Whileworkingthere,hespenthissparetimeinlearningshorthandandlaterbecameaparliamentaryreporter,notingdowninshorthandthespeechesmadebythemembersofParliamentandhurriedlysendinghisnotestotheprintinghousetobepublished.Theseyearsasareportedfurtherenrichedhisknowledgeofvariousclassesinsociety,andenabledhimtogetacquaintedwiththeinsideknowledgeoftheBritishlegalandpoliticalsystem.What’smore,thisexperiencepreparedhimbothinartandstuffforhiscomingliterarycareer,SuchasthecriticismandsatireofthePoorLawsinOliverTwist.Duringhiswholetime,CharlesDickenspublishedmanybooks,suchasSketchesbyBuz(1836),DavidCopperfield(1836-1837),OliverTwist(1837-1838),whichshowedhisprofoundsympathyforthepoorpeople.

OliverTwisttellsastoryofanorphanboy,whoseadventuresprovideadetailedpictureofthelowerdepthsofLondon.Oliverisachildofunknownparents,borninaworkhousewherehisunnamedmotherdiessoonafterhisbirth.OliverleadsamiserablelifeintheworkhouseunderthetyrannyofBumble,aparishcouncilofficial.Foodisgiveninscantymorsels,barelyenoughforonetoliveameagerexistence.Afteranunhappyapprenticeshipatanundertaker’sshop,wherehe,dressedinmourningclothing,actedastheattendantatfunerals,OliverrunsawaytoLondonandfallsintoagangofthieves.LedbyFagin,thegangincludesthebrutalburglar,BillSikes,Nancy,hiswhore,andayoungpickpocketcalledthe“ArtfulDodger”.EveryeffortismadetoconvertOliverintoathief.ThebenevolentMr.Brownlowrescueshimbutonlytemporarily.Theill-willedMonks,whohasaninterestinkeepingOliver’sparentageasecret,inducesthegangtokidnaphim.Oliverisforcedtojointhegangandtakepartintheircrimes.ThroughtheeffortofNancy,whoisbrutallymurderedbySikes,OliverisfinallyrescuedandthenadoptedbyMr.Brownlow.Monkshastoconfessthesecretthatheisthehalf-brotherofOliver.Hewantstoruinhisbrotherinordertoretainthewholethewholeofhisfather’sproperty.
