In1916,BritishexplorerSirErnestShackletonmadeoneofthefirsttripstoAntarcticaandbarelysurvived.NowanadventurernamedTimJarvishasannouncedplanstorecreateShackleton'sdangerousjourneynextmonth,hopingtoraiseawarenessaboutclimatechange.
ShackletonwantedtoleadthefirstjourneyacrossAntarctica,fromthenorthernsidetothesouth.Buttheadventurewentoffcoursewhenicedamagedhisship,andheandthecrewhadtofighttheirwaybacktocivilization.
Withnothingbutalifeboatandasmallamountoffood,Shackletonand5membersofhis22-mancrewsailed800milesthroughicebergsandfreezingconditions,fromAntarctica'sElephantIslandtoawhalingstationonanislandcalledSouthGeorgia,offthecontinent'scoast.Oncethere,Shackletonwasabletogethelptorescuethecrewmembershehadleftbehindmonthsbefore.
Almost100yearslater,JarvisplanstorecreatethevoyageinthesamekindoflifeboatthatShackletonwasforcedtousein1916.Thereplica(复制品)lifeboatisnamedafterAlexandraShackleton,thegreatexplorer'sgranddaughter,whooriginallyaskedJarvistoconsiderthetrip.

LittlewasknownaboutAntarcticaatthetimeofShackleton'sjourney.TheexpeditiongavetheworldimportantinformationaboutAntarctica'sclimateandgeography.Jarvisintendshis2013missiontoshowhowthecontinent'sicyenvironmenthaschangedoverthepasthundredyearsbecauseofclimatechange.
"TheironyisthatShackletontriedtosavehismenfromAntarctica,"Jarvistoldreporters."WearenowtryingtosaveAntarcticafromman."

Overtime,stoneshavefallenfromthemountainsidesontothelakebed.Someofthestonesaresmall,thoughothersweighasmuchas700pounds.Oncetheyaresituatedontheflatsurface,onemightbeeasytothinkthattheywouldremainthereforthousandsofyears.This,however,isnotthecase.Thesehugerocksandstones(knownasSailingStones,SlidingRocks,orMovingRocks)arefoundalloverthedrylakebedwithlongtrailshavingformedbehindthem,extendingforhundredsofmeters.Sincethereisnoevidenceofhumanoranimalactivitiesinthemovementofthesestones,onehastowonderhowitishappening.
Notonlydothestonesmove,buttheymoveincompletelydifferentdirections.Twostonescouldstartnexttooneanother,andstartmovingataboutthesamespeed,butonewillsuddenlystoporchangedirections.Sometimesthesailingstoneswillturnaroundcompletely,movingbacktowardstheirpointoforigin.Thetracksleftbehindaregenerallynowiderthan30cm,andlessthan2.5cmdeep.Thelongesttrackshavebeenformingformanyyears,thoughtodate,nobodyhaseverseentheevent.
