IrememberonedaymybestfriendBrianwasworkingonaproject.Hewasmakingahorseoutoftheclaythatourteacherkeptunderthesink.Andatonepoint,oneofthegirlswhowassittingathistable,seeingwhathewasdoing,leanedoverandsaidtohim,"That'sterrible.Thatdoesn'tlookanythinglikeahorse."AndBrian'sshoulderssank.Andhewaddeduptheclayhorseandhethrewitbackinthebin.IneversawBriandoaprojectlikethateveragain.
AndIwonderhowoftenthathappens.ItseemslikewhenItellthatstoryofBriantomyclass,alotofthemwanttocomeupafterclassandtellmeabouttheirsimilarexperience,howateachershutthemdownorhowastudentwasparticularlycrueltothem.Andsomeoptoutthinkingofthemselvesascreativeatthatpoint.AndIseethatoptingoutthathappensinchildhood,anditmovesinandbecomesmoreingrained,evenbythetimeyougettoadultlife.
Soweseealotofthis.Whenwehaveaworkshoporwhenwehaveclientsintoworkwithusside-by-side,eventuallywegettothepointintheprocessthat'sfuzzyorunconventional.AndeventuallythesebigshotexecutiveswhipouttheirBlackberriesandtheysaytheyhavetomakereallyimportantphonecalls,andtheyheadfortheexits.Andthey'rejustsouncomfortable.Whenwetrackthemdownandaskthemwhat'sgoingon,theysaysomethinglike,"I'mjustnotthecreativetype."Butweknowthat'snottrue.Iftheystickwiththeprocess,iftheystickwithit,theyendupdoingamazingthingsandtheysurprisethemselvesjusthowinnovativetheyandtheirteamsreallyare.
SoI'vebeenlookingatthisfearofjudgmentthatwehave.Thatyoudon'tdothings,you'reafraidyou'regoingtobejudged.Ifyoudon'tsaytherightcreativething,you'regoingtobejudged.AndIhadamajorbreakthroughwhenImetthepsychologistAlbertBandura.
Idon'tknowifyouknowAlbertBandura.ButifyougotoWikipedia,itsaysthathe'sthefourthmostimportantpsychologistinhistory--likeFreud,Skinner,somebodyandBandura.Bandura's86andhestillworksatStanford.Andhe'sjustalovelyguy.
AndsoIwenttoseehimbecausehehasjustworkedonphobiasforalongtime,whichI'mveryinterestedin.Hehaddevelopedthisway,thiskindofmethodology,thatendedupcuringpeopleinaveryshortamountoftime.Infourhourshehadahugecurerateofpeoplewhohadphobias.Andwetalkedaboutsnakes.Idon'tknowwhywetalkedaboutsnakes.Wetalkedaboutsnakesandfearofsnakesasaphobia.
Anditwasreallyenjoyable,reallyinteresting.Hetoldmethathe'dinvitethetestsubjectin,andhe'dsay,"Youknow,there'sasnakeinthenextroomandwe'regoingtogointhere."Towhich,hereported,mostofthemreplied,"Hellno,I'mnotgoinginthere,certainlyifthere'sasnakeinthere."
ButBandurahasastep-by-stepprocessthatwassupersuccessful.Sohe'dtakepeopletothistwo-waymirrorlookingintotheroomwherethesnakewas,andhe'dgetthemcomfortablewiththat.Andthenthroughaseriesofsteps,he'dmovethemandthey'dbestandinginthedoorwaywiththedooropenandthey'dbelookinginthere.Andhe'dgetthemcomfortablewiththat.Andthenmanymorestepslater,babysteps,they'dbeintheroom,they'dhavealeatherglovelikeawelder'sgloveon,andthey'deventuallytouchthesnake.Andwhentheytouchedthesnakeeverythingwasfine.Theywerecured.Infact,everythingwasbetterthanfine.Thesepeoplewhohadlife-longfearsofsnakesweresayingthingslike,"Lookhowbeautifulthatsnakeis."Andtheywereholdingitintheirlaps.
Banduracallsthisprocess"guidedmastery."Ilovethatterm:
guidedmastery.Andsomethingelsehappened,thesepeoplewhowentthroughtheprocessandtouchedthesnakeendeduphavinglessanxietyaboutotherthingsintheirlives.Theytriedharder,theyperseveredlonger,andtheyweremoreresilientinthefaceoffailure.Theyjustgainedanewconfidence.AndBanduracallsthatconfidenceself-efficacy--thesensethatyoucanchangetheworldandthatyoucanattainwhatyousetouttodo.
WellmeetingBandurawasreallycatharticformebecauseIrealizedthatthisfamousscientisthaddocumentedandscientificallyvalidatedsomethingthatwe'veseenhappenforthelast30years.Thatwecouldtakepeoplewhohadthefearthattheyweren'tcreative,andwecouldtakethemthroughaseriesofsteps,kindoflikeaseriesofsmallsuccesses,andtheyturnfearintofamiliarity,andtheysurprisethemselves.Thattransformationisamazing.
Weseeitatthed.schoolallthetime.Peoplefromalldifferentkindsofdisciplines,theythinkofthemselvesasonlyanalytical.Andtheycomeinandtheygothroughtheprocess,ourprocess,theybuildconfidenceandnowtheythinkofthemselvesdifferently.Andthey'retotallyemotionallyexcitedaboutthefactthattheywalkaroundthinkingofthemselvesasacreativeperson.
SoIthoughtoneofthethingsI'ddotodayistakeyouthroughandshowyouwhatthisjourneylookslike.Tome,thatjourneylookslikeDougDietz.DougDietzisatechnicalperson.Hedesignsmedicalimagingequipment,largemedicalimagingequipment.He'sworkedforGE,andhe'shadafantasticcareer.Butatonepointhehadamomentofcrisis.
HewasinthehospitallookingatoneofhisMRImachinesinusewhenhesawayoungfamily.Therewasalittlegirl,andthatlittlegirlwascryingandwasterrified.AndDougwasreallydisappointedtolearnthatnearly80percentofthepediatricpatientsinthishospitalhadtobesedatedinordertodealwithhisMRImachine.AndthiswasreallydisappointingtoDoug,becausebeforethistimehewasproudofwhathedid.Hewassavingliveswiththismachine.Butitreallyhurthimtoseethefearthatthismachinecausedinkids.
Aboutthattimehewasatthed.schoolatStanfordtakingclasses.Hewaslearningaboutourprocessaboutdesignthinking,aboutempathy,aboutiterativeprototyping.Andhewouldtakethisnewknowledgeanddosomethingquiteextraordinary.Hewouldredesigntheentireexperienceofbeingscanned.Andthisiswhathecameupwith.
Heturneditintoanadventureforthekids.Hepaintedthewallsandhepaintedthemachine,andhegottheoperatorsretrainedbypeoplewhoknowkids,likechildren'smuseumpeople.Andnowwhenthekidcomes,it'sanexperience.Andtheytalktothemaboutthenoiseandthemovementoftheship.Andwhentheycome,theysay,"Okay,you'regoingtogointothepirateship,butbeverystillbecausewedon'twantthepiratestofindyou."
Andtheresultsweresuperdramatic.Sofromsomethinglike80percentofthekidsneedingtobesedated,tosomethinglike10percentofthekidsneedingtobesedated.AndthehospitalandGEwerehappytoo.Becauseyoudidn'thavetocalltheanesthesiologistallthetime,theycouldputmorekidsthroughthemachineinaday.Sothequantitativeresultsweregreat.ButDoug'sresultsthathecaredaboutweremuchmorequalitative.Hewaswithoneofthemotherswaitingforherchildtocomeoutofthescan.Andwhenthelittlegirlcameoutofherscan,sheranuptohermotherandsaid,"Mommy,canwecomebacktomorrow?
"(Laughter)
AndsoI'veheardDougtellthestorymanytimes,ofhispersonaltransformationandthebreakthroughdesignthathappenedfromit,butI'veneverreallyseenhimtellthestoryofthelittlegirlwithoutatearinhiseye.
Doug'sstorytakesplaceinahospital.Iknowathingortwoabouthospitals.AfewyearsagoIfeltalumponthesideofmyneck,anditwasmyturnintheMRImachine.Itwascancer.Itwasthebadkind.IwastoldIhada40percentchanceofsurvival.
Sowhileyou'resittingaroundwiththeotherpatientsinyourpajamasandeverybody'spaleandthinandyou'rewaitingforyourturntogetthegammarays,youthinkofalotofthings.Mostlyyouthinkabout,AmIgoingtosurvive?
AndIthoughtalotabout,Whatwasmydaughter'slifegoingtobelikewithoutme?
Butyouthinkaboutotherthings.Ithoughtalotabout,WhatwasIputonEarthtodo?
Whatwasmycalling?
WhatshouldIdo?
AndIwasluckybecauseIhadlotsofoptions.We'dbeenworkinginhealthandwellness,andKthrough12,andtheDevelopingWorld.AndsotherewerelotsofprojectsthatIcouldworkon.ButIdecidedandIcommittedtoatthispointtothethingImostwantedtodo--wastohelpasmanypeopleaspossibleregainthecreativeconfidencetheylostalongtheirway.AndifIwasgoingtosurvive,that'swhatIwantedtodo.Isurvived,justsoyouknow.
Ireallybelievethatwhenpeoplegainthisconfidence--andweseeitallthetimeatthed.schoolandatIDEO--theyactuallystartworkingonthethingsthatarereallyimportantintheirlives.Weseepeoplequitwhatthey'redoingandgoinnewdirections.Weseethemcomeupwithmoreinteresting,andjustmore,ideassotheycanchoosefrombetterideas.Andtheyjustmakebetterdecisions.
SoIknowatTEDyou'resupposedtohaveachange-the-worldkindofthing.Everybodyhasachange-the-worldthing.Ifthereisoneforme,thisisit.Tohelpthishappen.SoIhopeyou'lljoinmeonmyquest--youasthoughtleaders.Itwouldbereallygreatifyoudidn'tletpeopledividetheworldintothecreativesandthenon-creatives,likeit'ssomeGod-giventhing,andtohavepeoplerealizethatthey'renaturallycreative.Andthosenaturalpeopleshouldlettheirideasfly.ThattheyshouldachievewhatBanduracallsself-efficacy,thatyoucandowhatyousetouttodo,andthatyoucanreachaplaceofcreativeconfidenceandtouchthesnake.
