FIELDOFINVENTION

Thisinventionrelatestochewtoysfordomesticcarnivorousanimalsandamethodformakingthechewtoys.Moreparticularly,thisinventionrelatestorawhidechewtoysprimarilyfordogs,whichareappetizingandlong-lasting,andsatisfytheirinstinctiveneedtochew.

BACKGROUNDOFTHEINVENTION

Carnivorousdomestically-trainedanimals,primarilydogs,haveabasicinstincttochew.Chewtoyshavebeenusedformanyyearstochannelthatinstinctiveurgetochewinahealthydirectionandprovidethemwithexercisefortheirjaws."Chewtoys"areintendedtobechewedbyadogforanextendedperiodoftime,andshouldbedistinguishedfrom"treats"whichareintendedtobechewedbyadogforarelativelyshortperiodoftimeanddigested.Chewtoystypicallyfallwithintwodistinctcategories:

（i）thoseconsistingofsyntheticmaterialsand（ii）thoseconsistingatleastinpartofanimalskinorpartsorthelike.However,asexplainedbelow,existingchewtoysincludevariousdisadvantagesmakingthemunsatisfactoryinmanyinstances.

Priorchewtoyshavebeenmanufacturedutilizingrubber,polyurethane,latex,nylon,otherplastics,andothertypesofsyntheticmaterial.Whilechewtoysconsistingofthesesyntheticmaterialsmaybelong-lastingandresistanttodisintegration,theyaretypicallyodorlessandtasteless.Mostdogsdonotgetexcitedaboutthesechewtoysbecauseoftheirodorlessandtastelessaspects.Accordingly,manydogswillnotchewonthesetoys,orwillonlychewonthesetoysforshortperiodsoftime.Further,thesyntheticnatureofthesechewtoysmakesthemdifficultand/ordangeroustodigest.Thus,smallpiecesofthesechewtoyswhichbreakoffcanpotentiallycausedigestivedangerstotheanimals.Additionally,thesechewtoysarenotbiodegradableandarethereforebadfortheenvironment.

Chewtoyshavealsobeencomprisedofportionsofdeceasedanimals.Ofthesetypesofchewtoys,rawhideisacommonlyusedmaterial.OnesuchchewtoyisdisclosedinU.S.Pat.No.2,988,045toFisherandshowninFIG.1herein.Thischewtoyincludesarolledandknottedsheetofrawhide.Tomakethebone,asheetofwetrawhideisrolledintoacylindricalform1,andwhileitisstillwet,atleastoneoftheends2isknotted3tosimulateananimaljoint.Therolledandknottedrawhideisthendried.

Chewtoysconsistingsolelyofrawhidemaybemoreappealingandeasiertodigestthansyntheticchewtoys.However,manydogsfindthesechewtoystolackofsubstantialflavorandodor.Accordingly,manydogsbecomeboredwiththesechewtoysafterawhileandwillatmostonlychewonthemforshortperiodsoftime.

Somemanufacturershavecoatedorbastedtherawhidechewtoyswithvariousflavorstoprovideadditionalodororflavorandenticedogstochewlonger.Forexample,somerawhidechewtoysarebastedinahickory-flavoredmarinadetoenhancetheirflavorandodor.Otherrawhidechewtoyshavebeencoatedinacheese-flavoredsubstance.However,thesebastedandcoatedchewtoysaredisadvantageousformanypetownersastheycanstaincarpetsandotheritemsinahouse.Further,thesecoatedandbastedchewtoysareundesirableformanypetownersbecausetheybecomemalodoroustohumans.

Accordingly,achewtoywhichovercomestheproblemsanddisadvantagesofthepriorartwasthusneeded.

SUMMARYOFTHEINVENTION

Itisanobjectiveofthepresentinventiontocreateachewtoyfordomesticcarnivorousanimals,e.g.,dogs,whichovercomesthedrawbacksofexistingchewtoys.

Itisanobjectiveofthepresentinventiontoprovidearawhidechewtoywhichenhancesadog'sdesiretochewthetoyforextendedperiodsoftime.

Anotherobjectiveofthepresentinventionistoprovideachewtoywhichisbiodegradableandiscompletelysafetobeingestedbydogs.

Itisyetanotherobjectiveofthepresentinventiontoprovideachewtoyfordogswhichisnotcoatedorbastedandwhichdoesnotstaincarpetsandotherhouseholdarticles.

Itisanobjectiveofthepresentinventiontocombinetheindividualadvantagesofjerkyandrawhideinasinglechewtoytoprovideasuperiorchewtoywhichfullysatisfiesadog'sinstinctiveurgetochew.

Itisanobjectiveofthepresentinventiontoprovideachewtoywithahighcontentofrawhidetendingtoreducethetartaronteethofthedogschewingthetoy.

Inoneaspect,thechewtoyofthepresentinventionasheetmemberiscomprisedofarawhidesheetmemberandamembercomprisedofjerky.Thejerkymemberiswrappedintherawhidesheetmem
