ResearchinBritainhasshownthat“greenconsumers”continuetoflourishasasignificantgroupamongstshoppers.Thissuggeststhatpoliticianswhoclaimenvironmentalismisyesterday'sissuemaybeseriouslymisjudgingthepublicmood.
AreportfromMintel,themarketresearchorganization,saysthatdespiterecessionandfinancialpressures,morepeoplethaneverwanttobuyenvironmentallyfriendlyproductsanda“greenwave”hassweptthroughconsumerism,takinginpeoplepreviouslyuntouchedbyenvironmentalconcerns.Therecentlypublishedreportalsopredictsthattheprocesswillrepeatitselfwith“ethical”concerns,involvingissuessuchasfairtradewiththeThirdWorldandthesocialrecordofbusinesses.Companieswillhavetobemorehonestandopeninresponsetothismood.
Mintel’ssurvey,basedonnearly1,000consumers,foundthattheproportionwholookforgreenproductsandarepreparedtopaymoreforthemhasclimbedfrom53percentin1990toaround60percentin1994.Onaverage,theywillpay13percentmoreforsuchproducts,althoughthispercentageishigheramongwomen,managerialandprofessionalgroupsandthoseaged35to44.
Between1990and1994theproportionofconsumersclaimingtobeunawareoforunconcernedaboutgreenissuesfellfrom18to10percentbutthenumberofgreenspendersamongolderpeopleandmanualworkershasrisensubstantially.RegionssuchasScotlandhavealsocaughtupwiththesouthofEnglandintheirenvironmentalconcerns.AccordingtoMintel,animageofgreenconsumerismasassociatedinthepastwiththemoreeccentricmembersofsocietyhasvirtuallydisappeared.TheconsumerresearchmanagerforMintel,AngelaHughes,saidithadbecomefirmlyestablishedasamainstreammarket.Sheexplainedthatasfarastheaveragepersonisconcernedenvironmentalismhasnot‘goneofftheboil’.Infact,ithasspreadacrossamuchwiderrangeofconsumergroups,agesandoccupations.
Mintel’s1994surveyfoundthat13percentofconsumersare“verydarkgreen”,nearlyalwaysbuyingenvironmentallyfriendlyproducts,28percentare“darkgreen”,trying“asfaraspossible”tobuysuchproducts,and21percentare“palegreen”—tendingtobuygreenproductsiftheyseethem.Another26percentare“armchairgreens”;theysaidtheycareaboutenvironmentalissuesbuttheirconcerndoesnotaffecttheirspendinghabits.Only10percentsaytheydonotcareaboutgreenissues.
Fourintenpeopleare“ethicalspenders”,buyinggoodswhichdonot,forexample,involvedealingswithoppressiveregimes.Thisfigureisthesameasin1990,althoughthenumberof'armchairethicalhasrisenfrom28to35percentandonly22percentsaytheyareunconcernednow,against30percentin1990.Hughesclaimsthatinthetwenty-firstcentury,consumerswillbeencouragedtothinkmoreabouttheentirehistoryoftheproductsandservicestheybuy,includingthepoliciesofthecompaniesthatprovidethemandthatthiswillrequireagreaterdegreeofhonestywithconsumers.
Amonggreenconsumers,animaltestingisthetopissue—48percentsaidtheywouldbedeterredfrombuyingaproductifithadbeentestedonanimals—followedbyconcernsregardingirresponsibleselling,theozonelayer(臭氧层),riverandseapollution,forestdestruction,recyclingandfactoryfarming.However,concernforspecificissuesislowerthanin1990,suggestingthatmanyconsumersfeelthatgovernmentandbusinesshavetakenontheenvironmentalagenda.
