Successfulleaderscomeinawidevarietyofpersonalcharacteristicssuchastheirabilitytomakespeechesinpublicortorelatetopeopleingroupsorindividually.Wehaveallmetsuccessfulleadersthatwewonderedwhatenabledthemtobeeffective.Somearesmoothandsomearerough.Somearecharmingandsome…..Itisimpossibletofindanyonecharacteristicthatallofthemhaveandmanynon-leadersdonothave.
Motivationisthemostimportantcharacteristic(yes,itcanbecalledatrait)ofanyleader.Eventheshyestpersonmaybecomeahardchargerifsomethingnearanddeartothemisthreatened.IhaveseennumerousquietpeoplesuddenlyfindtheirpublicvoiceswhenNIMBY(not-in-my-backyard)becamerealtothemassometypeofdevelopmentbecamethreatenedtheirbackyards.Talktoparentsofschoolagechildrenandmanywillstepoutofthequietshells.Afterthethreatorneedpasses,someofthesepeoplereturntotheirnon-publicroles,butothersfindthattheyhavesomepreviouslyunknownornewlydevelopedskillsthatcanbeusedinotherleadershipactivities.Thesewillbecomethecommunityandorganizationalleadersofthefuture.
Communicationsskillsarethesecondmostimportant.Ifyoucannotcommunicateeffectively,youcannotbeaneffectiveleader.ButasIdiscussbelow,communicationsismuchmorethanbeingagoodspeaker.
Despitethegreatdiversityamongleaders,therearesomecharacteristicsortraitswhichmostsuccessfulleadershave.Thesearethe"Traits"listedhere.Veryfewleadershaveallofthemtothelimit,butthemosteffectiveleaderswillhavemostofthemwelldeveloped.Afewleaderswillhaveonlyafewofthesetraitssuchpersistenceortheabilitytogetpeopletoworktogether,buttheyarelikelytohavethosefewverywelldeveloped.
Thefourteentraitsdescribedherearethe"toolsofthetrade."Notallofthemwillbeusedineveryleadershipsituation,butlikeothertools,theyareavailableifneeded.Allofthesecharacteristicscanbedevelopedorattained.Nonearegenetic,althoughsomeofthetraitsmaybethegiftsofwiseparentstosomeveryfortunateyoungpeople.Formanyofus,theyaretheresultsofhardworkoveryearsoftime(veryslowlydevelopedhabitsinmostcases).Ihavetalkedtomanysuccessfulpoliticians,bankers,judgesandleadersofmanyothertypes,almosttoapersontheyhavesaidthattheyhaveworkedovertheyearstofurtherimprovetheirskills.Somehavedoneitthroughformalclassesorsessionswithprofessionals,otherthroughobservationandpractice;butallhaveworkedathoningtheirabilities.Afterlookingbackovermyownstrugglestoobtainmoreofthese,Ihavecometostronglybelievethatalmostanypersoncanwithsufficientmotivationandworkdeveloptoaconsiderabledegreeallfourteenofthetraits.Iquicklynotthattoday,Iamnotaskilledspeakerorwriter,butIcangetmymessageacross.Oneoffavoriteactivitiesisselling-ofideas.TurnmelosewithasmallgroupandagoodideaandIaminclosetoheaven.
Theequationforsuccessasaleaderisverysimple:
themoreofthesetraits(tools)youhavesuccessfullydevelopedthegreatertheprobabilityofyoursuccessinmosttypesofleadershipand,indeed,inmostcareers.

1.Anoutgoingstyle-theabilityandenjoymentof"workingthecrowd"isaveryusefulskillbothforleadershipandmanyotherpartsoflife.Ihaveafriendwhowheneverheisinameetingoraparty,makessurethatheshakeseveryhandandgreetseveryperson.
Charismaisoftenthoughtofasatraitofmanyleaders.Wearenotquitesurewhatcharismais.Itisprobablytheabilityofapersontogainveryquicklytheattention,respectandtrustofothers.FamousleaderslikeMartinLutherKingandJohnKennedyissaidtohavehadcharisma.Noquestion,itisaneffectivetoolforleadersincertainsituations,butitisdifficulttolearn.
Humorandwarmthareeffectiveinmostleadership(andnon-leadership)situations.Ifwearenotfortunateenoughtohavethemnow,wecandevelopthem.Startbydevelopingagoodsmileandlaugh.Thiswillbehardformanymalesinourculturewhohavebeenacculturatedtobestoicwithastoneface.Womenhaveadistinctadvantageinbeingencouragedtosmileandtoshowemotions.Thiswilltakealongperiodofconsistentself-consciousefforts.Myfatherwasawonderful,butstoicMissourifarmerwhosmiledlittle.I,ofcourse,modeledmyselfafterhim.Thus,Ihaveworkedonmysmileforyears(stilldo).

Wordsareoftennotenough.MostpeopletodaygetmostoftheirinformationfromTVandthemostwidelyreadnewspaperisUSAToday.TVnewsprogramsandUSATodaybothusesimplestyleswithlotsofcolor,picturesandgraphs.Picturesandothervisualaidsareespeciallyusefulinhelpingpeopleunderstandabstractideas.
Istronglyencourageyoutotakeeveryopportunitythroughcoursesorinformalopportunitiestoimproveyourcommunicationsskills.Thesetraits,truly,arethebottomlineofleadership-withthem,successfulleadership(andmanyothertypesofsuccess)isanopendoor-withoutthem,successwillbeastruggle.
