HenryMoorewasanEnglishsculptor(雕塑家)andartist.Hewasbornon30July,1898,inCastleford,Yorkshire.Hewastheseventhchildinafamilyofeightchildren.HisfatherworkedinacoalmineinCastlefordbutdidn’twanthischildrentofollowinhisfootsteps,sothechildrenwereeducatedatalocalschoolasmuchaspossible.
Itwasinhisteenageyearsthathedevelopedaninterestandtalentinart.Thishelpedhimtogetascholarship(奖学金)toCastlefordSecondarySchool.Aged18,hewascalleduptothearmy.In1917,hewasinjuredduringagasattackattheBattleofCambrai.Afterhisinjury,hespenttherestofthewarbehindthelinetrainingnewsoldiers.Afterthewar,hecontinuedhiseducation.In1921,hewonascholarshiptostudyattheRoyalCollegeofArt.
HenryMoorewasatalentedstudent.Heusuallyexperimentedwithnewstylesandthisoftendispleasedhisteacherswhoweretryingtoteachtheclassicstyle.In1924,hespenttimetravellinginItalyandlaterParis.TherehecouldviewthegreatMasterssuchasMichelangeloandGiovanniPisano.ButMoorewasalsoinfluencedbyhisstudiesofprimitiveart(原始艺术),andattheLouvrehewasparticularlyinfluencedbytheChacMool.
OnhisreturntoLondon,hetookupateachingpostattheRoyalCollegeofArt.Thispart-timepostenabledhimtoworkonhisownart.Inthe1930s,Moorebecameanactivememberoftheinformalmodemartmovement,centeredaroundtheideasofpeoplelikePabloPicassoandJeanArp.
TheSecondWorldWarledtomoretraditionalstylesandMooreworkedasawarartist.ThishelpedMoorebecomefamousandafterthewarhereceivedmanyawardsandopportunitiesinAmerica.In1948,hewasawardedtheInternationalSculpturePrizeattheVeniceBiennale.Hewasamanofmodestmeans.Thoughhewasfamousandrich,helivedfrugally(节约地),rememberinghisYorkshireroots.
