AnneofGreenGableswaswrittenbyLucyMaudMontgomeryin1904,attheageof30.Itspublicationwasnotsuccessfulatthebeginning,withitsmanuscript5timesofbeingrejected.Until1908,itwasfinallyfanciedandpublishedbyL.C.PageCompanyofBoston,America.
Afteritspublication,AnneofGreenGablesbecameabest-seller,6timesofreprintsinoneyear.Inthesecondyear,itseditionintheUnitedKingdomwaspublishedfor15times.Millionsoflettersfromtheworldwidereaderswiththeiradmirationforthisbook,justlikesnowflakes,drifteddownintoLucyMaudMontgomery’shouse,expressingtheirhopetoknowwhatwouldhappentolittleAnneafterwards.
What’sinteresting,thegreatwriterMarkTwainwasamongthosedevotingfans.OldMarkwasweakandlonelyinhistwilightyears.However,Anne’sstorylightedhishardlifeandwashighlyspokenofas“themostmovingandlovablechildcharactersincetheimmortalAlice(inAliceinWonderland)”.

MarillaandMatthewCuthbert,sisterandbrother,livetogetheratGreenGables,afarminthetownofAvonleaonPrinceEdwardIsland.TheydecidetoadoptaboyfromanorphanasylumtohelpMatthew,whohasaheartdisease,ontheirfarm.Mistakenly,therecomesagirlnamedAnneShirley,finallykeptatGreenGables.Thislittleyounggirl,aboutelevenyearsold,dottedwithfrecklesonherfaceandwithtwolongbraidsofredhair,isextremelyfondoftalkingandimaging.HerdistinctivecharactersimmediatelycharmMatthew,ashyoldman,whiletheyaredisapprovedofbyMarilla,astrict,conventionalandpracticalwoman.Gettingalongwitheachotherdayafterday,therelationshipbetweenMarillaandAnnegetsbetterandbetter.
AnneisaskedtolearnhowtoprayinSundayschool,finishallherhouseworkbeforetalking,apologizeaftersayingdisrespectfulwordstoMrs.RachelLynde,ameddlesomeofficiousneighbor,becauseofherhurtingcommentsaboutAnne’sappearance.AnnemakesbosomfriendswithDianaBarry,apretty,merryandamiablegirllivingnearGreenGables.Atschool,shestudieshardandprogressesquickly.ShealsomakesfriendswithJaneAndrewsandRubyGillis,addingDianaBarry,theyfourformingastorycluboftheirown.AnnecompetesinstudieswithGilbertBlythe,ahandsomeboywhoonceteasesaboutAnne’sredhair,althoughheapologizesmanytimes,whichisratherintolerableforAnne.
Anneandsomeotherclassmates,distinguishedinstudies,areorganizedtogetherandtutoredindustriouslybyMissMurielStacy,atruementortoAnnewithnewteachingmethods.Eventually,Anne,alongwithGilbert,Ruby,Janeandseveralotherstudents,goestotheQueen’sAcademy.Sheobtainsateachinglicenseinoneyear.Besides,shewinstheAveryscholarshipwhichallowshertopursueaB.A.atRedmondCollege.
Unfortunately,Anne’sbelovedMatthewdiesofaheartattackafterthelossofhisandMarilla’smoneyinabankfailure.AnnedecidestogiveupthescholarshipandteachnearGreenGablestohelpMarilla,whoseeyesightisdiminishing.GilbertgivesAnneagenuinelyprecioushandbygivinghertheteachingworkatAvonleaSchool,whichenableshertostayandtakegoodcareofMarillaatGreenGablesallthroughtheweek.DeeplymovedbytheactofGilbert,AnneholdsoutherhandandbecomesagoodfriendofGilbertwhoiseagertobeoneofherslongbefore.

Romanticismreferstotheartisticmovementprevalentduringthefirstthirdofthenineteenthcentury.ItbeganwiththebirthofLyricalBalladsbyWilliamWordsworthandSamuelTaylorColeridgein1798andendedwiththedeathofSirWalterScottin1832.ThemajorRomanticpoetsincludedWilliamBlake,WilliamWordsworth,JohnKeats,PercyByssheShelley,andLordGordonByron.TheRomanticMovementtypicallyassertstheuniquenatureoftheindividual,theprivilegedstatusofimaginationandfancy,andthevalueofspontaneityover“artifice”and“convention”,thehumanneedforemotionaloutlets,therejectionofcivilizedcorruption,andadesiretoreturntonaturalprimitivismandescapethespiritualdestructionofurbanlife.Theirwritingsareoftensetinrural,pastoralorGothicsettingsandtheyshowanobsessiveconcernwith“innocent”characters--children,younglovers,andanimals.

2.1AbriefintroductiontoLucyMaudMontgomery
RenownedasthemostfamousfemalewriterinCanada,LucyMaudMontgomerywasborninClifton(nowNewLondon),PrinceEdwardIslandonNovember30,1874.Shelivedwithhermaternalgrandparents,helpingwithallkindsofchores,onanoldfarmsurroundedbyappleorchardsinCavendishafterhermother’sdeathandfather’sremarriage.
LucyMaudMontgomerybeganwritingpoemsattheageofnine.Whenshewas13,shewonthethirdprizeinthenationwidecompetitioncontestofCanada.Bytheageofsixteen,shestartedtocontribute.Shewasacollegestudent,ateacherandaneditor.Butmostofthetime,sheworkedindustriouslyonherfarmasacommonperson.Shemarriedtoaministerattheageofthirty-six.Asthewifeofaminister,besidesdoingallthehouseworkasawifeandamother,shehadtotaketheresponsibilityforallthesocialwork,includinghostingSundayschools,organizingChristmasshows,andhavingheart-to-hearttalkswithvariouskindsofpeople,etc.ShepassedawayonApril24,1942.
Duringherbusyandpainstakingyears,LucyMaudMontgomerymadeeveryefforttospareseveralhoursforreadingandwritingeveryday.Throughallthoseyearsofhardwork,LucyMaudMontgomerybecameaprolificwriter,producingatotalofover20novels,numerousshortstories,poemsandautobiographies,and10volumesofunpublishedprivatediaries.
2.2LucyMaudMontgomery’sworks
