Abstract:
ThesetofWilliamFaulknermostworksareaboutsouthernsocialhistoryandinnerworldofpeople,describingthesituationafterthesouthernsocialhistorybegantodeclineandtheescapeofthearistocratshastothetrendofsoutherncomplexsociety’schange.AndARoseforEmilydeeplyreflectsthehistoryreferredabove,andgenerallyandprofoundlyexplainstherootsofEmily’stragedy.Theplacewheretheauthorlivesisthesetofhiswork.Theworkscouldbedividedintothreecategoriesofrootsoftragedy:
southerncomplexandsocialhistoricalcondition,depressionfromherfatherandtwistedmentality.Thoserootsoftragedyarecloselylinkedtosocialbackgroundinsouth.Thereadercandeeplyknowtheuniquewritingskillsoftheauthorthroughdescriptionsaboutthreekindsofrootsoftragedyinhiswork.

WilliamFaulkner’beingaprominentwriterin20thcentury’sAmericanliterature,gainshisworldpopularityfortheuniquestyleofhisnovel,havingapositiveandprofoundimpactonthedevelopmentofAmericanliterature.Faulkner’sstatusinmodernAmericacanbecomparedwithShakespeare’sstatus.wecanseeFaulkner’sliteraryachievementandsocialreputation.HismoststoriessetintheimaginaryYoknapatawphaCounty,therearelotsoffamousworksofWilliamFaulknerasTheSoundandtheFury(1929),LightinAugust(1932),andAbsalom,Absalom(1936)andsoon.
ARoseforEmily,Faulkner’sfirstshortstory,whichwaspublishedin1930,issetinthetownwithnameJeffersoninYoknopatawpha.Theauthor,WilliamFaulknerseemstosetthestoryinaplacethatresemblestheplacehelivedin,namelyOxford.Mississippicorrelatestothelifeontheauthor.InaRoseforEmily,themaincharacterMissEmilyisdescribedinthebeginningofthestoryasanelderlywomanthatoncepartofhighsocialstatusandnowpartofthebitterdecayofthetown.WilliamFaulkner’sARoseforEmilydrawsavividpictureofthesouthoftheUnitedStates.Fromthenovel,weknowthatitwastheperiod,theoldsouthfadesandthesouthbegantodecaygraduallyaftertheCivilWar.Thestoryprovidesdescriptionofthedecadenceoftheoldsouth.TheprogressofthedecayingisthesamewiththedeathofEmilyandherfather,aswellasvalue,traditionandlifestylewhichhavegraduallywentoutofthelifeofpeopleinthesouth.
AsamasterpieceinAmericanliterature,ARoseforEmilyhasbeenattachedgreatimportancebyavarietyofscholars.Thestoryhasbeenanalyzedfromvariousanglesassymbolism,feminism,religion,GothicLiteratureandsoon.Fromthepointofview,thefeminismofLiRongrui,thestoryreflectsatragedyofEmilywhichisindicatedinthemurderofherlover.ThewholelifeofEmilywascaughtbythecageofoldtradition,Emilyhasneverescapedfromit.Emilycanbevictimofthepatriarchalcodes.Thisthesiscontainsfivechapters.ThefirstchapterisIntroduction.Inthischapter,theauthorintroducesWilliamFaulkner,ARoseforEmily’sbackgroundandthestructureofthisthesisbasically.Inchaptertwo,theauthorintroducessomebriefinformationofstory,whichisusedtoanalyzethenovel.ChapterthreeanalyzesARoseforEmilyofthecharactersEmily,Emily’sfatherandNegroHomerBarreninthenovel.ChapterfourfocusontheoriginofEmily’sTragedy.Inthis,theauthormainlyinterpretsthethemeoftheoriginofEmily’stragedy.Thelastchapterisconclusion,whichinthischaptertheauthorconcludesthatARoseforEmilyimbuesthenovelwithhistoricalandrealisticmeanings,andenhancesitsreadabilityandprofundity,whichhelpstoexplainwhythisnovelhasstoodoutasamasterpieceamongtheinnumerousworks.

“Gothic”novelisoneofthedirectsourcesofcontemporarywesternhorrormovieswhichispopularinEuropearound18thcentury.ThetermofGothic(Goth)originallycamefromthenameofGothicTeutonictribal,andlateritwasusedrefertoamedieval
