MechanismofAntivenom*
Antivenomactstoneutralizethepoisonousvenomofthecobraandcausesthevenomtobereleasedfromthereceptorsite.Thus,thereceptorsitesthatwerepreviouslyblockedbyvenomarenowfreetointeractwiththeacetylcholinemolecule,andnormalrespirationresumes.Thespentantivenomandtheneutralizedvenomarethenexcretedfromthebody.
Venomcomposition(anditscorrespondingtoxicity)canvaryamongcobrasfromthesamespeciesandevenfromthesamelitter--itcanalsovaryforanindividualcobraduringitslifetime--andallofthismakeseachcobrabitetrulyunique.Inordertoinsurecorrecttreatment,antibodiesspecifictoeachformofcobravenommustbedeveloped.Thecorrectantibodiesmaybesynthesizedbyinjectinghorseswithasmallamountofcobravenom,andthencollectingtheantibodiesproducedbythehorses'immunesystems.Ofcourse,largesamplesofcobravenommustbecollectedforthisprocess,andmanysnakefarmsaroundtheworldmakesignificantamountsofmoneybyharvestingthedeadlysnaketoxin.
