TheCatcherInTheRye,whichwaswrittenbyJeromeDavidSalinger,tellsastoryaboutHolton’stwo-dayexperimentandfeelingsafterhedismissedbythemiddleschool.HewashangingoutintheNewYorkCityandseeingmanyuglysidesofthesociety.Althoughhewasborninthemiddleclassandhadgoodconditiontolive,tostudyortowork,heexpressedhisdissatisfactioneither.Holtonwasacomplicatedandcontradictoryyoungster,butwithaheartyearningforbeautifullifeandloftyideal.Hatingtheheadmaster,helpingnunsraisemoneyforsurvivors,caringhissistercarefully,Holtonwasreallyaboybeyondaprotagonistinthenovel.
WhatonearthmadeHoltonbecomesuchakindofyounger?
Inmyopinion,therearethreereasons.Firstly,everypersonlivesinhisspecificsocialbackground.ThebookwaswrittenaftertheSecondWorldWar,theAmericansocietyandeconomywaswaitingtorecovertothelevelbeforetheSecondWorldWar.Secondly,differentpersonhasdifferentlivingconditions.Holtonwaslivinginamiddleclass.Hedon’tworryabouthowtolive.Sohehadmuchfreetimetothinkaboutthesociety.Andhiseducationintheschoolplantedthesocialresponsibilitydeeplyinhisheart.Thirdly,theAmericanvaluemakescontributionstoit.Itemphasizesasinglepersonismoreimportantthancollectivity,whichismuchdifferentfromthevaluesofus.Holtonwasalsobelievedthisvalue.
However,itissuchapersonthatmademethink.Thereisasentenceinthebook,“asignofanimmaturemanisthatheiswillingtoforacausebravelydying,amaturemanofmarkingishimwouldliketoforacausemeanlyalive”.IntheancientChina,peoplewereaskedtosacrificeforhisbeliefs.Butinthemodernsociety,itbecomesdifferent.Wearetaughttoprotectourownlifeinanycondition.Butasasoldier,weshouldalsobelieveinit.Asoldier’sdutyisprotectingmotherlandandpeople.Whenfacingenemies,whatchoosewouldyoudo?

itchange.Resistingisreallynotawisechoice.Maybeyouwillsaythatoneperson’spoweristooweaktomakeanychange,butwecaninfluencepeoplearoundus.Bythisway,yourvaluecanbespreadfaraway.Thenthewholeworldmustchangeintheend.Justbelieveyourself.

ThebeginningofthestoryfromPenceyschool.Penceymiddleschoolisveryfamousandhasagreatpopularityinpeople'sminds,however,theherodescribesthepenceymiddleschoolfollowas"Penceyisjustasotherschools,itcan’tcultivatetalentsatall.AndIdon’tseeanyoutstanding,intelligentandexcellentstudents."Besides,healsosaidthereareaplentyofthievesinpenceymiddleschool.Inholden'sopinion,themostunforgivablethinginthatschoolisfuilledwithhypocriticalpeople,especiallythe isvery heseesordinaryparents,hejustsayhelloto seetherichandpowerfulwhodriveagoodcar,hewilltalkwiththementhusiasmlyinalongtime.BesidesthedisgustedAcleandMrRuddtower.ThereasonthatHoldenleavespenceyisnotforhefailedsixsubjects,buttherearealothypocrite
ifthereareendlessgloryandsplendor,buttheentirecampusisindifferentandalmosttobeanohumanworld.
ThereisnohappinessinHolden's ifhecanfeelhappy,itisonlyafewpeopletogivehim.Hisrejectgoodthings,althoughitisarealconcern.WhenhishistoryteacherSpencertellshimthathisparentsarethebest feltverydisgusted,heheartilyhatestheword"better".Whileit'shardformetoimagine,asachild,whyhecouldthinksouglyabouttheworld?
Thoughtherearemanyuglythingsinthisworld,too.Heeventhinkssometinylittlethingsveryhateful.Whenheseesaboywhoisjustlikeaguyinthestreetandgettogetherwithhisgirlfriend.Iftheylaughconstantly,hethinkstheirlaughissimplybutnot somebodyelseplayingatune,healsothinksthemanisjustshowoffhis awomanwithachildisbeingmovedandcryatthemovies,healsoconsideredaphony.HeevenboringtohateChristians.InHolden'seyes,allsortsofthingsisjustafakedeathoffarce.
WhenHoldenseestheuglysideoflife,hetellshislonelinesswithoutanyreservation.Thiskindoflonelinessisnotasimplesadnessinthesenseofsolitude,butitisnotapersoncanreallyunderstandhim.AlthoughhehatesMrRuddtower,hewouldalsoliketodanceinfrontofhim."IalsoneedanaudienceandIalsoliketoinfrontofotherstoshowoffmyself"Thisisthevoiceofhisheart,heneedtohear,tounderstand
andnotaelegantlyfalsefaceandthesoftgreetings.Canapersonfeelhappywithouttheaudiences?

Ontheotherhand,hisspiritualworldisinnocent,hehatesallphonythingswhileseekssincerityandloveandhehimselfisapersonfulloflove.Heloveschildren,becausechildrenfromfallingintothecliffreferringtotheadultworldwhichheassociateswithhypocrisyandugliness.Hedoesn’twantchildrentostepintotheadultworld;hewantsthemtostayinnocentforever.Thatiswhywhenheseestheword“fuckyou”onthewallofPhoebe’sschoolheissoangrythatheevenwantstokilltheguywhowroteit.Hisdegenerationisinessenceakindofresistance,becausehedoesn’twanttowallowinmirewiththoseguyshedespises.“Anyway,Ikeeppicturingalltheselittlekidsplayingsomegameinthisbigfieldofryeandall.Thousandsoflittlekids,andnobody'saround--nobodybig,Imean--exceptme.AndI'mstandingontheedgeofsomecrazycliff.WhatIhavetodo,Ihavetocatcheverybodyiftheystarttogooverthecliff--Imeanifthey'rerunningandtheydon'tlookwherethey'regoingIhavetocomeoutfromsomewhereandcatchthem.That'sallI'ddoallday.I'djustbethecatcherintheryeandall.Iknowit'scrazy,butthat'stheonlythingI'dreallyliketobe.
