Thepenetrationfeaturecanbeaccessedinoneofthefollowingways:

FromtheMenuBar,selectMesh,thenCheck,thenComponents,thenPenetration

FromtheToolpage,gotothepenetrationpanel
Thepenetrationpanelallowsyoutochecktheintegrityofyourmodel,visualizeproblemareas,andfixtheproblemareas.Thethreeentitiesthatcanbecheckedareelements,componentsandgroups.Typically,thegroupcheckwouldbeforcheckingcontactdefinitions(forexample,Abaqus/LS-DYNA).
Thispanelallowsyoutocheckcomponentsforelementpenetrationandintersection.Moreimportantly,youcancorrectyourmodel.Penetrationandintersectioncanbeusedindividuallyorcollectively.Penetrationisdefinedastheoverlapofthematerialthicknessofshellelements,whileintersectionisdefinedaselementspassingcompletelythroughoneanother.

Usethefollowingguidelinesforconductingchecksonmodels:

Checkscanberunonboth2-Dand3-Delements,2-Delementsonly,or3-Delementsonly.
•
Theincludeselfinterferenceoptionincludescomponentsthatbendandpassthroughthemselves.Thisoccursrarelyandisexpensivewhenrunningthecheck.Bydefault,thisoptionisoff.
•
Bydefaultthecheckissettoallinterfaces,meaningbothintersectionandpenetration.Theintersectionsonlyoptionandthepenetrationsonlyoptionareavailable.
•
Theallowableinterferencedepthoptionallowscertainpenetrationsandintersectionstobeignorediflessthanthevaluespecified.
•
Anadditionaloption,uniformthickness,allowsyoutoassignaglobalthicknesstoallcomponents.
•
Anadditionaloption,thicknessmultiplier,allowsyoutomultiplytheexistingthicknessesinthemodel.
Whenthepenetrationcheckisinvoked,anewpenetrationtabisinvokedinthebrowserarea.
Theresultsaredisplayedinatreeformatforeaseofdisplayandaresplitintointersectionsandpenetrationswiththenumberofcomponentsthatareclashinginbrackets.Intheexampleabove,twocomponentsareintersectingandelevencomponentshavematerialpenetration.Expandingeachtreewillprovidemoredetailastowhichcomponentshavefailed.Thecolumns(ID,Elems,Depth,Comps)providevaluableinformationonwhichcomponents'IDsareinvolved,thenumberoffailedelements,thedepthofpenetration(notapplicableforintersections),andnumberofcomponentsaffectedinthepenetration/intersection.Eachofthecolumnscanbesortedbyclickingthecolumnheader.Atthebottomofthetabareathereisamessagebarwhichwilldetailthestatusofthecheck,thenumberoffailedelements,andanywarningsanderrorsasthechecksareinvoked.
Youcanalsoclicktherightmousebuttontoaccessalloftheoptionsandtoolswithinthepenetrationandintersectioncheck.Thecontextmenuwillinvokeandwillprovidetheoptiontofixeitherpenetrationsorintersections,dependingonwhetherthepenetrationparent/childfolderorintersectionfolderhasbeenhighlighted.
Theoptionsbuttonallowsfortheconfigurationofthedisplay,automaticfixing(intersectionsandpenetrations),anddepenetrationvectorandconfigurationofthetreedisplay.
Thefixingofpenetrationsandintersectionsfallsintotwocategories:
automaticandmanual.Thesecapabilitieswillbediscussedinmoredetailinthetutorial.
Exercise
Thisexerciseusesthemodelfile,penetration_check.hm.
Step1:
Retrievethemodelfile,penetration_check.hm.

FromtheMenuBar,selectFile,thenclickclickOpen....
2.
Browsetothefile,penetration_check.hmandclickOpen.
3.
FromtheMenuBar,selectPreferences,thenclickUserProfiles….

SelectLsDyna.
ThismodelisanLS-DYNAmodel,therefore,itisimportanttochosetheappropriateuserprofilesothatHyperMeshcanaccesstheactualthicknessvaluesoftheshellcomponents.Thethicknessvaluesarerequiredformaterialpenetrationcheck.

Step2:
Runthepenetrationcheck.
1.
Gotothepenetrationpanel.
2.
Toinvokethepenetrationcheck,selectallthecomponentsbyclickingcomps.

Clickcompsontheright-handsideofthepanel,clickall,andclickselect.

Clickcheck.
Oncethecheckhascompleted,thePenetrationtabpopulates.Inthisexample,therearetwointersectionsand11penetrations.Expandingthetreetheresultswilldisplaythefollowing:
Thetreeispopulatedbyaparent/childormaster/slaverelationship.Asanexamplelookingattheintersections,thetoplineshowsthecomponent,RockerFwdTopPanelRH(parent),andthenbelowiscomponent,RockerInnerPanelRH(child).Itisimportanttounderstandthatthereisalwaysareciprocalrelationship;thesecondentryisRockerInnerPanelRH(parent)andthenthecomponent,RockerFwdTopPanelRH(child).Inthiscasethereisaone-to-onerelationship.Itisespeciallyimportanttounderstandthiswhenthereisaone-to-manyrelationship(forexample,RockerInnerPanelRHunderpenetrations).Clicking theparentcomponentwillalwaysshowthatcomponentplusallthecomponentsbelow(children).Clickingachildcomponentwillshowthatcomponentwiththeparentcomponentonly.
Step3:
Reviewtheintersectionresults.

InthePenetrationtab,clicktheIntersectionsheadingtoviewalltheintersections.
Basedonwhichmodeischosen,certaincomponentsaredisplayedonthescreen.

Fixtheintersectionresults.
HyperMeshincludestwomethodsoffixingpenetrations:
manualandautomatic. Tofixintersectionsmanually:
1.
UnderIntersections,clickthecomponent,RockerFwdTopPanelRH.
2. ClickManualFixTools(
)toensurethattheintersectingentitiescanbefixed.
Additionalbuttonspopulateforintersectionfixing.
3.
EnsureElementsfromTreeSelectionisselected–youwillnotpickanyadditionalelements.
4.
EnsureMoveinNormalDirectionisselectedforthedirectionofmovement.
5.
Fordistancevalue,enter2.
6.
Clicktheleftarrowbuttontwiceandnoticetheselectedelementsmovinginthechosendirection.
Aftertheelementshavebeenmovedbyavalueof4,theynolongerintersect.
7.
ClickRecheck(
)andnoticetherearenointersections.Only11penetrationsremain.
Important
Adialogboxdisplaysthatstates:
"Currentresultswillbelostbyrecheckingthemodel.Wouldyouliketocontinue?
"ClickYes.Thepenetrationtabneedstoberefreshed.
Alternatively,youcanusetheautomaticfixingtools:
1. Loadthefile,penetration_check.hm,again.
2. Gotothepenetrationpanel.
3. Toinvokethepenetrationcheck,selectallthecomponentsbyclickingcomps.
4. Clickcompsontheright-handsideofthepanel,clickall,andclickselect.
5. Runthecheckonallcomponents

HighlighttheIntersectionsdirectoryinthePenetrationbrowser.
Noticethattherearecurrentlytwointersections.

Right-clicktoinvokethecontext-sensitivemenu.ChooseAutomaticRecursiveIntersectionFix–thewrencheswillturngreenindicatingthatthefixwassuccessful.TheAutomaticRecursiveIntersectionFixwillrunthroughallpassesautomatically,theAutomaticIntersectionFixwillrunthroughonepassatatime(mostfixeswillrequiremultiplepasses).

RuntheRecheck—theintersectionshavebeenfixed.
Step5:
Interrogatethepenetrationresults.

Expandthepenetrationtree.

Clickcomponent,C-PillarBotInnerPanelRH.
Thepenetrationresultswilllookasfollows:

Clickthevisualizationoptions,
toviewthedifferenttypesofresultsdisplayforthepenetration.
Rememberthatthecolumnscanbesorted.Forexample,ifyouwereonlyinterestedintheworstoffendingpenetrationsthensortingbythedepthcolumnwillreorganizethetreestructure(whilestillretainingtheparent/childrelationship).
Inthisparticularexample,forcomponentC-PillarBotInnerPanelRH,thereare18elementsthathavefailed(parentandchild),themaximumpenetrationdepthis0.159,andthereisonlyonecomponentpenetrating.
Step6:
Fixthepenetrationresults.
Withinthecheckingtoolthereisanautomaticpenetrationfixthatwillremovethepenetrationswithinthemodel.Thisworksbyphysicallymovingthefailednodestonewlocationstoremovethematerialpenetration.Therearetwooptions:
automaticpenetrationfixandautomaticrecursivepenetrationfix. Bothwilldothesamething,buttheautomaticoptionoftenrequiresyoutouseitseveraltimessuccessivelytoeliminateallpenetrations,whiletheautomaticrecursivecompletesthefixinoneclick.However,theiterativeoptionwilltakelongertocomplete,becauseitisessenti
