Uponenrollingincollege,CarsonhadinitiallyintendedtomajorinEnglishandbecomeajournalistornovelist.Herattentivenesstopresentationallowedhertoconveyevenratherdryfactsinanevocativeprosestylethatheldtheattentionofthegeneralreader.Weddedtoherextensiveacademictraininginbiology,Carson'stalentforexpressivewritingpositionedherideallytobringscientificfindingsaboutecologytoamassaudience.Shepublishedafamoustrilogyaboutthedelicateandcomplexecologyofthesea,beginningwithUndertheSea-Wind.Thatfirstvolumetookalarge-scaleapproach,describingthelivingsystemsoftheoceanineverydayeasilyunderstoodterms.UndertheSea-Windwasonlyamoderatecommercialsuccess,butit,alongwithCarson'swritingsfortheUnitedStatesFishandWildlifeService,setthestageforhersecondvolume,publishedtenyearsafterthefirst.TheSeaAroundUsmadeRachelCarsonahouseholdname.ItbecamenotonlyabestsellerbutalsoaNationalBookAwardwinner.Init,Carsonexaminedmoreexplicitlythanbeforetheeffectsofhumanactiononthecreaturesoftheocean.ThelastbookinthetrilogywasTheEdgeoftheSea,inwhichCarsontrailedherwriterlyandscientificgazeontheshorelineoftheEastCoasttoexaminetheendangeredorganismsthatpopulatedit.
ThesebooksestablishedCarsonasapublicfigurewhoadvocatedrespectfortheenvironment,buttheworkthatwouldbehermostlastinglegacywasyettocome.Shebegantoexaminedataontheeffectsofagriculturalpesticides,spurredinpartbyaletterfromtwofriendswhoownedafarminMassachusettsandexpressedconcernthatsprayedpesticideswerecausingharmtolocalwildlife.Carson'sresearchconvincedherthathighexposuretopesticidessuchasDDTthreatenednotonlybeneficialinsectsandbirdsbutalsopeople.Sheputherconclusionsinalandmarkfourthscientificvolume.SilentSpring.Inthefamousimagethatgavethebookitstitle,Carsonhypothesizedaboutanecosysteminwhichthecallingofbirdshadbeensilencedbypoisoninsoilandgroundwater.
Carsonallegedthattheregulationsgoverninguseofthesechemicalswereinadequate,thoughherpositionswerenotasextremeastheyaresometimesnowcharacterized.Shedidnotsupporttheoutrightbanningofpesticides.Rather,sheobjectedto"indiscriminate"use,whichistosay,usewithoutanythoughtforcautionandmoderation.Eventually,Carson'sviewsweretakenseriouslyatthehighestlevelsofgovernment.PresidentJohnF.Kennedy'sScienceAdvisoryCommitteesolicitedheradviceonhowtoimproverulesaboutpesticideuse.ShealsotestifiedbeforeCongress.Throughherinfluence,sheassistedinbringingaboutfarstrictercontrolsontoxicchemicalssuchasDDT,whichdeterioratesslowlyandthusremainsinsoilandgroundwaterforverylongperiodsoftime.
