All buttwopiecessold,fetchingmore than£70m,arecordforasalebyasingleartist。
Itwasalast victory.Astheauctioneer calledoutbids,inNewYorkoneof theoldestbanksonWall Street,LehmanBrothers,filedforbankruptcy。
Theworld artmarkethad alreadybeenlosingmomentum fora whileafter risingbewilderinglysince2003. Atitspeakin2007it was worthsome $65 billion, reckonsClareMcAndrew,founderof ArtsEconomics, aresearchfirm-double thefigurefive years earlier. Since thenit may havecome down to$50billion.Butthemarket generatesinterestfar beyond itssizebecauseitbrings togethergreatwealth,enormousegos,greed,passionandcontroversyinawaymatchedby fewotherindustries。
Intheweeksandmonthsthat followed MrHirst’ssale,spendingof any sortbecamedeeplyunfashionable, especially inNewYork,wherethebail—outof thebankscoincidedwiththelossof thousands of jobsand thefinancial demise of manyart-buyinginvestors. Intheartworld that meantcollectors stayedawayfromgalleriesand salerooms。
Sales ofcontemporaryart fell bytwo-thirds,andinthe mostoverheatedsector-for Chinese contemporaryart—theyweredownbynearly 90% intheyear to November 2008. Withinweeks theworld'stwobiggestauctionhouses,Sotheby’s and Christie’s, hadto payoutnearly$200min guaranteestoclientswho hadplaced works for salewiththem。
The current downturnintheartmarketisthe worst since theJapanesestopped buyingImpressionistsattheendof1989,amovethatstartedthemostseriouscontractionin the market sincetheSecondWorldWar。
Thistimeexperts reckonthat pricesareabout40% downon their peak onaverage, thoughsomehavebeenfar morefluctuant。
