OnNov.30,1835,SamuelLanghorneClemenswaswelcomedintotheworldasthesixthchildofJohnMarshallandJaneLamptonClemens.LittledidJohnandJaneknow,theirsonSamuelwouldonedaybeknownasMarkTwain—America’smostfamousliterary(文学)icon(偶像).
Samuel’sfatherwasajudge,andhebuiltatwo-storyframehouseat206HillStreetin1844.Asachild,Samuelwaskeptindoorsbecauseofpoorhealth.However,attheageofnine,heseemedtorecoverfromhisailmentsandthenattendedaprivateschoolinHannibal.
WhenSamuelwas12,hisfatherdiedofpneumonia(肺炎),andat13,Samuelleftschooltobecomeaprinter’sapprentice(学徒).Aftertwoshortyears,hejoinedhisbrotherOrion’snewspaperasaprinterandaneditorialassistant.ItwastherethatyoungSamuelfoundheenjoyedwriting.
At17,heleftHannibalforaprinter’sjobinSt.Louis.WhileinSt.Louis,Samuelbecameariverpilot’sapprentice.Hebecamealicensedriverpilotin1858.Samuel’spenname,MarkTwain,comesfromhisdaysasariverpilot.Itisarivertermwhichmeans,12feetwhenthedepthofwaterforaboatisbeingmeasured.“MarkTwain”meansthatissafetonavigate(航行).
In1861,SamuelbeganworkingasanewspaperreporterforseveralnewspapersallovertheUnitedStates.In1870,hemarriedOliviaLangdon.
MarkTwainbegantogainfamewhenhisstory,TheCelebratedJumpingFrogofCalaverasCountyappearedinTheNewYorkSaturdayPressonNovember18,1865.MarkTwain’sfirstbook,TheInnocentsAbroad,waspublishedin1869,TheAdventuresofTomSawyerin1876,andTheAdventuresofHuckleberryFinnin1885.Hewrote28booksandnumerousshortstories,lettersandotherarticles.
MarkTwainpassedawayonApril21,1910,buthasafollowingstilltoday.HischildhoodhomeisopentothepublicasamuseuminHannibal.WalkingtoursaregiveninNewYorkCityofplacesthatMarkTwainvisitednearhisbirthdayeveryyear.
