Thankyou.Thankyou.Thankyousomuch.Goodafternoon.IamhonoredtobeinthetimelesscityofCairoandtobehostedbytworemarkableinstitutions.Foroverathousandyears,Al-AzharhashadstoodasabeaconofIslamiclearning.Andforoveracentury,CairoUniversityhasbeenasourceofEgypt'sadvancement.Together,yourepresenttheharmonybetweentraditionandprogress.

Assalamu-alaikum.
WemeetatatimeofgreattensionbetweentheUnitedStatesandMuslimsaroundtheworld,tensionrootedinhistoricalforcesthatgobeyondanycurrentpolicydebate.TherelationshipbetweenIslamandtheWestincludescenturiesofcoexistenceandcooperationbutalsoconflictandreligiouswars.
Morerecently,tensionhasbeenfedbycolonialismthatdeniedrightsand

Allthishasbredmorefearandmoremistrust.Solongasourrelationshipisdefinedbyourdifferences,wewillempowerthosewhosowhatredratherthanpeace,thosewhopromoteconflictratherthanthecooperationthatcanhelpallofourpeopleachievejusticeandprosperity.Andthiscycleofsuspicionanddiscordmustend.I'vecomeheretoCairotoseekanewbeginningbetweentheUnitedStatesandMuslimsaroundtheworld,onebasedonmutualinterestandmutualrespect,andonebaseduponthetruththatAmericaandIslamarenotexclusiveandneednotbeincompetition.Instead,theyoverlapandsharecommonprinciples,principlesofjusticeandprogress,toleranceandthedignityofallhumanbeings.
