Aswehaveseeninearlierchapters,theAmericandefinitionofsuccessislargelyoneofacquiringwealthandahighermaterialstandardofliving.Itisnotsurprising,therefore,thatAmericanshavevaluededucationforitsmonetaryvalue.ThebeliefiswidespreadintheUnitedStatesthatthemoreschoolingpeoplehave,themoremoneytheywillearnwhentheyleaveschool.Thebeliefisstrongestregardingthedesirabilityofanundergraduateuniversitydegree,oraprofessionaldegreesuchasmedicineorlawfollowingtheundergraduatedegree.Themoneyvalueofgraduatedegreesin“nonprofessional”fieldssuchasart,history,orphilosophyisnotasgreat.
Thisbeliefinthemonetaryvalueofeducationissupportedbystatisticsonincome.BenWattenberg,asocialscientist,estimatedthatinthecourseofalifetimeamanwithacollegedegreein1972wouldearnabout¥380000morethanamanwithjustahighschooldiploma.PerhapsthishelpstoexplainsurveyfindingswhichshowedthatAmericanswhowishedtheyhadledtheirlivesdifferentlyinsomewayregrettedmostofallthattheydidnotgetmoreeducation.
