GeneralCourseDescription
English101:
CriticalThinkingandWriting(3)Applicationoftheprinciplesofclearthinkingandeffectivewritingtoexpositoryandargumentativeessays.MustbepassedwithagradeofCorbetter.
English101LearningObjectives
1.Understandingthevaluesofreading,writing,andcriticalthinkingintheUniversitycommunityStudentsshouldrecognizetherolereading,writing,andthinkingplayintheUniversity,aswellasthesignificanceofsuchintellectualvirtuesashumility,courage,honesty,perseverance,hopefulness,consideration,andcivility.
2.UnderstandingrhetoricStudentsshouldbeintroducedtorhetoricandunderstandthedramaticandsituationalnatureofcommunication.Understoodastheartofdiscovering,evaluating,andcommunicatingknowledgeinresponsetotheideasofothers,rhetoricremindsusthatwritingisthemeans,nottheendofcommunication,theevidenceofawriter’sdesiretoaffectaparticularaudiencethroughcraftedproseforaspecificpurpose.
3.Readingactively,critically,andresponsiblyStudentsshouldlearntoanalyzethewritingofothers,notingfocus,arrangement,logicaldevelopment,vocabulary,andstyle.Studentsshouldlearnthedifferencebetweenreadinginformationandreadingliteraryart.Studentsshouldalsolearntoacknowledgehowtheirexperiencesandattitudeslimit,enable,anddeterminetheirresponsestotexts.
4.UnderstandingwritingasaprocessStudentsshouldlearnwritingasaprocessofvariousproblem-solvingtasks,includingplanning,discovering,drafting,revising,andediting.Studentsshouldalsolearnthatthisprocessissituational:
differentpurposesandaudiencesforwritingdemanddistinctwritingprocessesandpresentationformats.
5.WritingclearlyandeffectivelyStudentsshouldlearntoseewritingasanactofcommunicationratherthansolelyanactofprivateexpression.Theyshouldlearnabouttheissuesandresponsibilitiesentailedincomposingconcise,vivid,andcoherentproseforageneralreadershipandspecificaudiences.
6.ThinkingcriticallyStudentsshouldlearncriticalthinkingasanactive,purposeful,andorganizedprocessthatweusetomakesenseoftheworld.Theyshouldlearntoevaluatethequalityoftheirideasaswellastheideasofothers.
7.Understandingtheformalconventionsofvariousessaygenres,paragraphs,sentences,andwordusageStudentsshouldlearnthebasictextualconventionsofacademicwriting,includingthepersonalessay,expositorywriting,analysis,andargument,aswellasunderstandtheneedtofulfillreaders’expectationsaboutfocus,organization,development,andvoiceineach.Studentsshouldlearntheconventionalformsandfunctionsofparagraphs.Studentsshouldalsodeveloptheabilitytousevarioussentencepatternsandtoeditforcorrectness,variety,andcorrectusage.
8.DevelopinganawarenessoflanguageStudentsshouldlearnhowlanguageisavalue-ladentoolfordiscoveringandcommunicatingideas.Studentsshouldrecognizehowalanguage-userisalwaysalanguage-chooserwhopromotesorinhibits(consciouslyornot)furtherthinking,communication,andaction.

Allworkcomposedforthisclassmustbewrittenexclusivelyforthisclassandbeyouroriginalwork.Youmayofcoursereceiveassistanceonyourwriting,butsubmittingsomeoneelse’sworkasyourownorfailingtoacknowledgesourcesappropriatelywillbegroundsforplagiarism.Violationsofacademichonestywillresultinfailure.SeeyourStudentHandbookformoreonAcademicHonesty.
EssayGrades
Essayswillbegradedaccordingtotheessayevaluationcriteriaattached.Studentsmayreviseessaysonceafterreceivingthefirstevaluationontheirthirddrafts.Anessay’sfinalgradewillbeanaverageofthelasttwogradesitreceives.Forexample,ifanessayreceivedaConthethirddraftandanAonthefourth,thefinalgradeforthatessaywouldbeaB.
OtherEffectsonFinalGrade
Fiveabsenceswillresultinfailure.Ifyoumustmissaclass,contactaclassmatetogetthehomeworkassignmentforyouortoturninyourwork.Lateworkwillnotbeacceptedunderanycircumstances.Allassignmentsmustbesubmittedtoreceiveapassinggrade.Noincompleteswillbegiven.
ExtraCreditOptions
Duringtheterm,Iwillprovideyouwithanumberofextracreditopportunitiesrelatedtoattendingeventsonandoffcampusthatinsomewayrelatetoourcourse.Inaddition,studentsmayearnupto500extracreditpointsforsharingwiththeclassasong,article,orpoemthatrelatestoanycoursetopic.Studentsmayearnthissecondtypeofextracreditnomorethanfourtimesoralimitof2000extracreditpoints.
