作为一种国际化语言,英语在世界上扮演了一个很重要的角色。
英语在联合国中是一种很普遍和运用频繁的语言。
它在国际航空、航海及体育锻炼是一种不可缺少的交流工具。
它在国际贸易中也是一个很重要的媒介。
除此之外,它在科学上也是一种国际化语言。
然而,许多中国人在用英语和外国人交流有很大困难。
所以我需要提高口语的交流能力。
这篇文章主要讲述了三个问题:
为什么我们需要提高口交流能力、影响它的因素以及提高它的方法。

Asaninternationallanguage,Englishplaysaveryimportantroleintheworld.EnglishisoneofthelanguageswhicharegenerallyandfrequentlyusedintheUnitedNations.Itisanindispensablecommunicationtoolfortheinternationalairlines、voyageandphysicalexercisesarea.Itisalsoanimportantmediumininternationaltrade.Besides,itisaninternationallanguageinthesciences.However,manyChinesepeoplehavedifficultyincommunicatingwithforeignersinEnglish.SoweneedtoimprovecommunicativecompetenceinspokenEnglish.Thisarticlemainlytalksaboutthreeissues:
whyweneedtoimprovespokenEnglish,communicatecompetence、thefactorsthatinfluenceitandthemethodstoimproveit.

Asweallknowthatlanguageisusedtocommunicatewitheachotherandthat’swhatreallycounts.Peopleneedcommunicationindailylife.Besides,howtoimprovecommunicativecompetencehasalwaysbeenafocusofstudyoverthepastdecades.Whenpeoplewithdifferentculturalbackgroundscommunicatewitheachother,misunderstandingsaswellasconflictswillappear.Theworldissurroundedbyobjects.Communicationactivitiessatisfypracticalneed—materialtransformationormessagecommunicationaswellastheprocesssuitableforsocialrules.Communicationistheprerequisiteforthesmoothandsuccessfulrelationshipamonghumanbeingsanditpromoteshumanbeingsdevelopment.ThisarticleattemptstofocusonhowtoimprovespokenEnglishcommunicativecompetence.AsEnglishisbecomingmoreandmoreimportant,itisessentialtoknowhowtoimprovespokenEnglishcommunicativecompetence.

ThereisnodoubtthatEnglishistheworld’smostwidelyusedlanguages.Peopleregardasalanguageinoneofthreeways:
asanativelanguage,asasecondlanguage,orasaforeignlanguage.EnglishisspokenasanativelanguagebyoverthreehundredmillionpeopleintheUnitedStates,Britain,Australia,NewZealand,Canada,SouthAfrica,andsomeCaribbeancountries.Asasecondlanguage,Englishisoftennecessaryforofficialbusiness,education,informationandotheractivitiesinmanycountries.
ItissaidthatEnglishhasbecomethelanguageofinternationaltradeandtransport.MostairplanepilotstravelingfromonecountrytoanothercommunicateinEnglish.AllshipssailingontheoceanscallforhelpbyradiousingEnglish.Ithasbeensaidthat60percentoftheworld’sradiobroadcastsand70percentoftheworld’smailusesEnglish.IntheinternationalsportscommunityandintheinternationalsciencecommunityEnglishisthemostcommonlyusedandthemostwidelyused.
NowadaysmostChinesestudentsarestudyingEnglish;however,onlyfewstudentscancommunicatewithforeignersinEnglish.SinceChinahasenteredtheWTOandheldOlympicGames,Englishmustbewidelyusedinforeigntrade.Intheyearof2010,theWorldExpositionwillbeheld;thereforealargenumberofpeoplewillcometoChina.Moreover,whatislanguageforsomepeopleinfactseemstobeatopicforpracticinggrammarrulesandlearningasetofwords—thelongerthewordsthebetter.That’salittlemisguided;Languageisfortheexchangeofideasandforcommunication.Therefore,weneedtoimprovecommunicativecompetenceinspokenEnglish.
3.FactorstocommunicativecompetenceinspokenEnglish
3.1Culturaldifferences
Differentcountrieshavedifferentcultures.Asoneofthemostimportantcommunicationtoolslanguageisusedundercertainculturalbackgroundsandsubjectedtoculture.Thatistosay,youshouldspeaktherightwordsintherightplaceandattherighttime.Thereforeweneedtoknowsomethingaboutculturalknowledgeandcustoms.Inusualcommunicativeoccasions,forinstance,whenforeignersarepraisedorgiventhanks,theircommonreactionisveryhappyandtheywillspeakouttheirtruefeelings.Whenforeignershearsuchpraise,forinstance,“Youaregoodatswimming.”theywillusuallysay:
“Thankyouverymuch.”Ontheotherhand,Chinesecultureregardsmodestyasavirtue,sowhenChinesearepraised,theyfeelhappyinthehearttoo,buttheydon’ttelltheirtruefeelings.Forexample,whenaforeignfriendsays:
“Youswimverywellindeed.”,accordingtoourcustom,weusuallyanswer“Oh,no.Iswimverybadly.”SuchreactionisconsideredtobehypocriticalbyBritishandAmericanpeople,sotheydon’twanttocommunicatewithyou,obviouslyitmakescommunicativepurposecan’tcometrue.AnotherexampleisthatChinesepeopleliketosay:
“吃饭了没有啊?
”“您去什么地方啊?
”whentheysayhellototheirfriends.SuchwordstranslatedtoEnglishbecome“Haveyoueatenyet?
”“Whereareyougoing?
”.ForthosefromEnglish-speakingcountrieswhoonlysay“Hello”、“Hi”totheirfriendswhentheymeet,theformersentencemaylethimorherfeelthatyouwanttotreathimorherdinner,butyoujustsayitandthengoaway,heorshewillbelievethathimselforherselfistricked,thenheorhermaybreakoffallrelationswithyou.Obviouslythelattersentenceinvadesother’sprivacy,eventhoughtheygiveyouananswerreluctantly,theywillwhisperintheirheartthattheydon’twanttotalktoyouanylonger.Thusinturnmayinfluenceyoursuccesstocommunication.
3.2People’squalityandpersonality
Affectionhasanimpactinpeople’sleaningandactivityprocess.Obviously,communication,aman’ssocialattitudetowardsothers,affairs,thepurposeofcommunication、personalqualityandpersonalityareveryimportanttoputcommunicationintopracticeandtosucceed.Ontheonehand,itiswellknownthattalkingisthemostusedcommunicativeactivityforhumanbeings.Duringthetalk,weoftencomeacrosssomeonewholikestoplayexcessiveattentiontowordingandtotellotherswhatisrightandwhatiswrongfromtheirpointofview,theymayevenliketobecomeawinnerintheargument.Itisthesepeoplethatalwaysaffectthecommunicativeatmosphere.Becausetheircommunicativepurposemakesothersproduceannoyingfeelingsduringthetalk,thereforeitinfluencesthesuccessofcommunication.Ontheotherhand,aperson’squalityandpersonalityalsoaffectcommunicativecompetence.ThescholarA.Heberhasdonearesearchfortherelationbetweenthefactorandforeignlanguagelearning.Hefoundthatpeoplegraduallyestablishaself-protect---self-respectscreenduringtheprocessofknowingthemselves.(Self-respectrelatestocommunicativecompetence).Becauseapersonwhohasstrongself-respectcouldresistthethreatofself-participationduringthecommunicativeprocessandtheprotectivescreeniscomparativelylower,thereforeitisgoodforthemtocommunicatewithothers;onthecontrary,apersonwhoseself-respectisnotsostrongoftenestablishahighpsychologicalscreentoprotecttheawarenessofself-protection.Anditisthepsychologicalscreenthatinhibitsthecommoncommunicationwithothers.TakelearningspokenEnglishandphoneticsymbolsforexample,forbeginners,theywillfacesuchproblemsasnotbeingabletospeakEnglishfluentlyandreadphoneticsymbolaccurately,thereforepeoplewilllaughatthem.Thiswillthreatenlanguageitselfdirectly.Atthatmoment,thosewhohavestrongself-respectwillhavethecouragetofacethreateninglanguagetowardsthemandbecomebrave,andasaresulttheywillimproveexpressivecompetenceandpronunciationinspokenEnglish.Incontrast,thosewhoseself-respectisnotsostrong,neverspeakoutinordertoavoidthreateninglanguagetowardsthem.Sotheywillneverachieveanyprogress.
3.3Environment
Weallknowthatatryingtoimprovecommunicativecompetenceisasocialprocess.Namely,ithasdeepconnectionwithhisorhersocialactivitiesandenvironment.Forinstance,insomecountrieslikeIndia,SingaporeandsomeAfricancountrieswhich
