ThedivisionintotwopartiesgrewouttheestablishmentofaProtestantChurchofEnglandinthe16thcentury.Becauseofapurelyreligiousdifferenceofopinion,thePuritanswereseparatedfromthebroadbodyoftheAnglicanChurch.ThenonPuritanAnglicanswereonthesideoftheKingandChurch,andtheirsupporterswerecalledbytheiropponents“Tories.”ThePuritanswereforParliamentandtrade,andtheirsupporterswerecalledbythe“Tories”“Whigs”.TheToriesandtheWhigswereinpowerbyturnsforalongtime.In1833,theTorypartysplitintotwoanditsnamewaschangedtoConservative.Inthe1860stheWhigsbecameLiberals.Fromthattimeon,theLiberalsandtheConservativeswereinofficebyturnsuntil1922.Thepoliciestheyputintoeffectweresometimesdifferent,buttheywerebothcontrolledbytherich.
TheworkingclassbecamemoreandmoreunwillingtofollowtheConservativesandtheLiberals.Theywantedtohavetheirownparty.SotheLaborpartywasformedbythetradeunions.After1922theLaborPartygraduallyreplacedtheLiberalPartytobecomeoneofthetwomajorpartiesinGreatBritain.
