WilliamFaulknerwasanimportantwriterinthemodernliteratureperiodtimenotonlyinAmericabutalsointhewholeliteraryworld・HewasthemostprominentwriterinsouthernAmerica,andfamousforhisYoknapatawphacountry.Faulkner*sattitudetowardsthesouthern
uaristocraticvfamiliesthathewroteaboutwasambiguous・AlongsidehiscensureoftheirinjusticetotheAfricanAmerica,therewassomeindicationofpityorsympathy.Hisfamousshortstories"ARoseforEmilyn,wasagoodindextothemixedfeelingthathisworksrevea1.[5]ThisstoryhappenedaftertheAmericanCivilWar,thesouthernAmericawasdefeatedbythenorthern,andhadtoendtheslaveryandtheindustrializationprogresswhichbroughtbythenorthernwasinprosperity・Inthisstory,wecanseetheEmilyandthetownspeople,whorepresentedthesouthernAmericansaftertheCivilWar・Theyweresoafraidoflosingtheirwealth,position,andsteppingdownthestageofhistoryoftheirownaccord・InthetownwhereEmilylived,asthelastaristocrat,herwaswellrespectedbythetownspeople,andshewasregardedasthesymboloftheoldtraditionsandthepastglory.Whenshestillalive,peoplemighthastheillusionofgoingbacktotheirpastlives,onceshedied,theirrealizedthattheirpasthadalreadygone・Thenewpowercamefromnorthdestroyedtheirdreams,itwastheworldforthebourgeois・

2.1Emily'smiserablelife
Emilywasthemaincharacterinthisstory,andallherlifecanbedescribedasmiserable・ThestorystartedoffwithMs.Emily'sfuneral,whichimpressedusthefeelingofsorrow.Itstatesthat"thementhroughasortofrespectfulaffectionforafallenmonument,thewomenmostlyoutofcuriositytoseetheinsideofherhouse,whichnoonesaveanoldman-servant一一acombinedgardenerandcook一一hadseeninatleasttenyears・"[7]Aswecansee,Ms.Emilywassortofamysterytocitizensofthetown・Faulknercontinuouslyusedsymbolisminthestory.Whenthedeputationcametoherhouseforhertaxes,FaulknerdescribedhowthehouseandMs.Emilylooks,"onlyMissEmily'shousewasleft,liftingitsstubbornandcoquettishdecayabovethecottonwagonsandthegasolinepumps-aneyesoreamongeyesores",[8]thisstatementexplainstheEmily"sfamilywasanobleone,shewasanaristocrat,however,ithaspast,theysituationnowwasnotsogood,andthehousegaveoffadepressingmoodforus.[9_
WhenMs.Emilywasyoung,herdeceasedfatherusedtoforceawayalltheyoungmenthatwereinlovewithher・Thesummerafterherfatherdeath,shefellinlovewithaYankeebythenameofHomerBarron.Everyoneinthetownwaswhisperingabouttheirrelationshipandwonderingiftheyweremarried・Afterawhile,theydidnotseeHomerBarronanymore,andsometimeslater,Emilytoo.
