Peopleusuallythinkthatwomenarefriendsandwhentheyarefriendstheyarefriendsalltheway,butIbelievethatisanarrowpointofview.ForthefriendshipsIhaveandthefriendshipsIseeareatmanylevels,servedifferentpurposes,meetdifferentneedsandrangefromthoseasall-the-wayasthefriendshipofthefullsisterstothatofthemostcasualplaymates.
Considerthesefriendshipsatthedifferentlevels:
1.Conveniencefriends.Thesearethewomenwithwhom,ifourpathsweren’tcrossingallthetimewe’dhavenoparticularreasontobefriends:
anextdoorneighbor,awomaninourcarpoolormaybethemotherofoneofourchildren’sclosestfriends.
Conveniencefriendsareconvenientindeed.They’lllendustheircupsandsilverwareforaparty.They’lldriveourkidstoafootballmatchwhenwe’resick.They’llgiveusaliftwhenourcarisunderrepair.They’lleventakeourcatswhenwegoonholiday.
Butwedon’t,withconveniencefriends,everetoocloserortelltoomuch;wemaintainourpublicfaceandemotionaldistance.

Theyearshavegonebyandwe’vegoneseparatewaysandwe’velittleinmonnow,butwe’restilladearpartofeachother’spast.Everytimewhenweseeorwritetoeachotherweareputintouchwithanearlierpartofourselveswhichisimportantnevertolose.
4.Crossroadsfriends.Likehistoricalfriendsourcrossroadsfriendsareimportantforthefriendshipswesharedataveryspecial,nowpast,timeoflife.Atime,perhaps,whenweroomedincollagetogether;orworkedaseageryoungsinglesinabigcitytogether;orwenttogether,asmyfriendElizabethandIdidthroughaperiodoftimeoftreatmentinhospitalandabouttwomonthsofregainingourhealth.
Crossroadsfriendsestablishpowerfullinks,linksstrongenoughtoendurewithnotmuchmorecontactthanonce-ayearlettersatChristmas.Andoutofrespectforthosecrossroadsyears,forthosedramasanddreamsweoncesharedwewillalwaysbefriends.
