Morrisonexplainedthattheylookedatdifferentagegroupsandtheirmemories.Weoftenremembermorefromwhenweareteenagers,andthisiscalled“thereminiscencebump”.Thisisthetimeinyourlifewhenyouformyourideaofwhoyouare.ForoldpeoplewhohavememoriesrelatedtotheBeatles’music,mostofthosememoriesarefromwhentheywereteenagers.Butyoungerpeoplealsohadclearpersonalmemoriesfromtheirpast.

Thisstudywasdifferentfromothermemorystudies,becausepeoplerememberedeventsfromtheirpastwithlotsmoredetails.Morrisonexplained:
“Itwaslikepeoplehadtravelledbacktothepast,andtheyhadveryclearmemoriesofthingsthathadhappened.WhentheyheardasonglikeSheLovesYoubytheBeatles,theycouldrememberonenightinautumn1963.Theyrememberedwhattheywerewearing,whattheweatherwaslikeandwhattheirfriendsaidtothem.Yougetalotmoreinformationthanifyoujustsay,‘tellmeaboutanightyouremember’.”
Thestudyhasfoundthatmusiccouldbeusedwithpeoplewhohaveproblemsrememberingthepast.“Youcouldusemusictohelpimprovepeople’sabilitytoremember,”saidMorrison.“Inthefuture,wewouldliketodomoreexperimentstoseehowusefulmusicisinhelpingpeopletorememberthepast,andcompareittootherthingsthatmightalsohelp.”
