AEuropean-wideITSplatformofferingfunctionalitiesenablingeasymigrationofservices.Migrationisenabledbydefiningacommonmethodologyforpublishingservices,whichcoversinterfaces,dataformatsused,coverageareaoftheserviceandother.IPAisimplementedasproofofconceptutilizingMOBiNETasaplatformintegrationusecasedemonstration.TheperformanceofIPAisevaluatedintermsofcorrectnessofdecisionsmadeduringruntimeandbasedonuserinputinatrialperiod,involving40+testusersusingthesystemonaregularbasis.Keywords:
PARKING,MOBiNET,ITS1IntroductionTodaythetechnologyhasevolvedanditallowsuserstoalwaysbeconnectedandalwayshavingapowerfulandverycapabledevicewiththem,namelythesmartphone.Theconstantconnectivityofmobiledevicesallowsveryhighmobilityoftheuser,whichmeansthattheservicesusedalsomustsupportmobility,andnotjustmobilitywithinacitybutacrosscountries.OneparticulararearelatedtomobilityisIntelligentTransportationSystems(ITS),offeringservicesrelatedtotransportation.Itiswithinthissub-areathattheIntelligentParkingAssistant(IPA)systemhasbeendeveloped.TheIPAsystemisanin-carparkingguidancesystemthatintelligentlysupportstheusersinconnectionwithparking,morespecificallyinfindingandselectingparkinglots,andpayingforparkingsessions.TheIPAsystemhasbeendevelopedtakingadvantageoftheMOBiNET[1]platformandthefunctionalitiesthisIntelligentParkingAssistant-AShowcaseoftheMOBiNETPlatformFunctionalities2provides,ensuringthatthesystemeasilycanbemigratedtocitiesalloverEurope.TheMOBiNETplatformaimsatactingasabrokerofinformationandservicesrelatedtotransportation.Thisisdonebyofferinganumberoffunctionalitiestosupportbusiness-to-business(B2B)andbusiness-to-consumer(B2C)services.Theservicesarenothostedontheplatformbuttheplatformcontainsinformationaboutservicesincludingpricing,coveragearea,endpoint,protocol,input,output,andother[2].PreviousapproachestodevelopinganapplicationaimedathelpingusersfindingandselectingparkinglotsandpayingforparkingincludeSmartParkTrondheimParkering[3],Parker,Findavailableparking[4],ParkMeParking[5],andother.Eachoftheseofferasubsetofthefollowing:
liveinformationaboutavailability;turn-by-turnrouteguidance;priceinformation;paymentinvariousforms;findyourparkedcar;andotherfunctionalities.However,wheremostoftheexistingsystemsdowellinofferingvariousfunctionalities,theyarelimitedtooperatingwithincertaincitiesandareas.Thiscouldbeexplainedwithitbeingverydemandingandcumbersometoobtaintheneededinformationfromdifferentlocations,indifferentlanguages,differentpricingschemes,makeagreementswithlocalparkingcompanies,ensurethattheuserscanpayeventhoughtheycrosscountryandcurrencyborders.Thesearejustsomeoftheobstaclesmetwhenmigratingservicesacrosscountries.InthepresentefforttheIPAsystemisdevelopedanditisdescribedhowittakesadvantageoftheMOBiNETplatformwhichoffersasetofveryusefulfunctionalitiesfordevelopingandpublishingITSservicesinrelationtocross-countryusage.TheIPAsystemistoalargeextentbasedontheexperiencesanddevelopmentmadeintheDanishITSPlatformproject[6],whichwascarriedout2010-2019.Thisprojectwasalarge-scalefieldoperationtestwithGNSS-basedonboardunits(OBU).Itconsistedofaback-endserver,OBUsin425cars,andfourapplications;driverlog;dynamictrafficinformation;trafficstatisticstoolforroadoperators;andfull-automaticparkingpaymentsystemfortheusers.Around20millionkmofdrivingdatahasbeencollectedaspartoftheproject.Thefull-automaticparkingpaymentsystemwasonlyinoperationforafewmonths.Eventhoughitshowedconvincingresults,muchmorecouldbeexperiencedregardingreliability,usersattitudeandacceptance,andexperiencesfromtheparkingattendees,justtomentionafewtopics.Therestofthepaperisstructuredasfollows:
Section2givesanoverviewofthecomponentsintheIPAsystemandthecomponentsusedbyitisgiven;Section3describesthefunctionalitiesoftheMOBiNETplatformmostrelevanttotheIPAsystem;Section4describesthetechnicalaspectsandfunctionalitiesoftheIPAsystem;Section5describesusecasesoftheIPAsystem;AndSection6describeshowtheperformanceoftheIPAsystemisevaluated.2IntelligentParkingAssistant(IPA)SystemOverviewTheIPAsystemismadeasaverymodularsystem,enablingeasyadditionofsupportedareasIntelligentParkingAssistant-AShowcaseoftheMOBiNETPlatformFunctionalities3orregions,byaddingservicesviatheServiceDirectoryintheMOBiNETplatform.ThegoaloftheIPAsystemistohelpusersfindandselectparkinglotsbasedonuserinputandliveinformationaboutavailability,guideuserstotheparkinglot,intelligentlyevaluateiftheuserisinsideparkinglotwhenstopped,andautomaticallyinitiateaparkingsessionandpayforit.TheIPAsystemconsistsofthefollowingcomponents:
ParkAssistAndroidappwhichactsasthemainuserinteractioninterface;theParkingManagerservicewhichcontainstwosubservices:
ParkingInformationProviderandParkingSessionManager;theMapMatchingserverprovidingmapmatchingfunctionalitiesfortheapplication;andtheMOBiNETplatformthatactsasorchestratorandaplatformformigrationassistance,andwherethesystemispublishedthrough.ThisisillustratedinFigure1.Figure1IPASystemOverviewWiththissystemarchitecturetheParkAssistAndroidappisinthecentreofoperation,asitisinstalledontheenduserdeviceandfollowstheuserwhereverhegoes.TheMOBiNETplatformistheorchestratorthatdependingonwheretheuserisgeographically,providestheParkAssistappwithlocationsoftherelevantbackendservices.Thatis,theParkingManagerandtheMapMatchingserverareinterchangeableandcanvaryfromcitytocityandcountrytocountry.3MOBiNETplatformfunctionalitiesMOBiNETisaprojectaimedatmakingInternetofmobilityforITSservicesofEurope.Theideaistomakeaplatformtheone-stopshopforallservicesrelatedtoITSinEurope.TheIntelligentParkingAssistant-AShowcaseoftheMOBiNETPlatformFunctionalities4servicesincludeinformationproviderservices,front-endservices,back-endservices,dataformattranslatorservices,billingandidentitymanagement,andother.Figure2ArchitectureoftheMOBiNETPlatform[2].MOBiNETisrealizedviatheMOBiNETplatformthatofferssupporttoB2BandB2Cinteractions.InFigure2thearchitectureoftheMOBiNETplatformcanbeseenwherethekeycomponentsare:
Dashboard,ServiceDirectory,IdentityManager,BillingManager,SoftwareDevelopmentKit(SDK),andMOBiAGENT.TheDashboardoffersaccesstomostoftheothercomponentsfordevelopersandserviceproviders.TheServiceDirectorycontainsmetadataaboutservicesintermsofendpoint,interfacetype,inputandoutputdatatypes,ownership,pricingscheme,andmanyother.TheIdentityManagerhandlestheidentitiesofbothbusinessusersandprivateusers,andthecomponentisusedbothinconnectionwiththeDashboardandbyservices.TheBillingManagerofferspaymenthandlingfortransactionsforB2BandB2Cserviceuse.TheSDKoffersanumberofsupporttoolstohelpdevelopersgenerateandpublishservicesintheplatform.TheMOBiAGENTistheclientfrontendsoftware,orapp,thatuserscaninstallontheirdevicesthroughwhichinterfacetosearchingforservicesareoffered.TheMOBiAGENTalsooffersanumberofinterfacesforservicestouse,e.g.toacommunicationagentforvehicletoinfrastructurecommunication.IntelligentParkingAssistant-AShowcaseoftheMOBiNETPlatformFunctionalities5InFigure3themainflowandinteractionsbetweenDashboardandServiceDirectorycanbeseen,alongwithhowenduserservicesinteractwiththeServiceDirectory.Figure3DashboardandServiceDirectoryinteractions[7].InthescenariooftheIPAsystemthecomponentsoftheMOBiNETplatformareusedinthefollowingway.Servicedescriptionofthefront-endservice(app)ParkAssistisaddedtotheServiceDirectorysoenduserscanfindanddownloadtheapp.ServicedescriptionsareaddedtotheServiceDirectoryoftheback-endserviceprovidingparkinginformationandparkingsessionmanagement,andoftheMapMatchingserver.Theback-endservicesarediscoveredbytheappbycontactingtheServiceDirectoryduringruntimeandqueryingservicesbasedonservicetypeandthelocationoftheuserdevice.TheIdentityManagerisusedtoverifytheusercredentials,andtolinkauserwithaparkingbill.TheBillingManagerensuresthattransactionsareperformedfromtheusertotheparkingserviceprovider.4IntelligentParkingAssistantSystem4
