DavidUnaiponwasborninSouthAustralia,in1872.Asayoungman,helovedtoreadandwasinterestedinscienceandmusic.Hethoughtalotaboutnewwaystofixengineeringproblems.Betweentheyears1909and1944,Unaiponmadenineimportantinventions.Healsomadedrawingsforahelicopter（直升机）design.HegottheideafromtheAustralianboomerang（回飞镖）andthewayitmovedthroughtheair.Thishappenedin1914,beforewehadhelicopters.

UnaiponlivedmostofhislifeinAdelaideandworkedfortheAborigines'Friends'Association.HeworkedandtravelledaroundsoutheasternAustraliaforfiftyyears.Sometimes,whiletravellingfromtowntotown,hewastoldhecouldn'tstayinahotelbecausehewasblack,soheunderstoodtheproblemsofracism（种族主义）.

In1925,UnaiponbecamethefirstAboriginalwritertobepublished.HisfirstpublishedwritingwasanarticleinSydney'sDailyTelegraphnewspaper.Thearticlehadthetitle:

Eachyear,thewomenofOlney,England,andLiberal,Kansas,haveanunusual“pancakeracing”.ThistraditionissaidtohavestartedonShroveTuesday,1445,inOlney.ShroveTuesdayisthedaybeforetheChristianseasonofLentbegins.

Itissaidthatin1445,anOlneywomanwasmakingpancakes.Shesuddenlyheardthechurch（教堂）bellsring,signalingthebeginningoftheShroveTuesdayservice.Realizingthatshewasgoingtobelateforchurch,sheracedoutthedoorstillwearingherapron（围裙）andheadscarfandholdingherfryingpan（锅）withapancakeinit.Olneywomencontinuethistraditionmorethan500yearslater.

In1950,apersonofLiberalwantedhistowntojoininOlneyPancakeRace.HemadesomephonecallstoOlneytosetupafriendlycompetition,andthepeopleofOlneyacceptedthechallenge.

Therulesaresimple.Racersmustwearthetraditionalheadscarfandapron.Theyhavetoflip（抛）thepancakeintheairsothatitflipsandlandsbackinthepanontheotherside.Aftertherace,thereareShroveTuesdaychurchservices.ThenLiberalandOlneyconnectthroughavideocalltocompareracetimesandannounceawinner.

Inbothtowns,theraceshavegrownintolargerfestivals.Olney'sfestivalisanall-dayeventstartingwithabigpancakebreakfast.Liberal'sfestivallastsfourdaysandincludesaparade,agreatshow,andeatingcompetitions.

Althoughthewomen'sraceisstillthemainevent,bothtownsnowholdracesforboysandgirlsofallages.EmmaEvans,14,wasthewinnerofheragegroup'sraceinLiberallastyear.Sheworeanapronthathergrandmamadeforherandusedapanpasseddowntoherfromherolderbrother.Herfamilycheeredheronfromthesidelines.
