In1925,UnaiponbecamethefirstAboriginalwritertobepublished.HisfirstpublishedwritingwasanarticleinSydney'sDailyTelegraphnewspaper.Thearticlehadthetitle:

Eachyear,thewomenofOlney,England,andLiberal,Kansas,haveanunusual“pancakeracing”.ThistraditionissaidtohavestartedonShroveTuesday,1445,inOlney.ShroveTuesdayisthedaybeforetheChristianseasonofLentbegins.
Itissaidthatin1445,anOlneywomanwasmakingpancakes.Shesuddenlyheardthechurch(教堂)bellsring,signalingthebeginningoftheShroveTuesdayservice.Realizingthatshewasgoingtobelateforchurch,sheracedoutthedoorstillwearingherapron(围裙)andheadscarfandholdingherfryingpan(锅)withapancakeinit.Olneywomencontinuethistraditionmorethan500yearslater.
In1950,apersonofLiberalwantedhistowntojoininOlneyPancakeRace.HemadesomephonecallstoOlneytosetupafriendlycompetition,andthepeopleofOlneyacceptedthechallenge.
Therulesaresimple.Racersmustwearthetraditionalheadscarfandapron.Theyhavetoflip(抛)thepancakeintheairsothatitflipsandlandsbackinthepanontheotherside.Aftertherace,thereareShroveTuesdaychurchservices.ThenLiberalandOlneyconnectthroughavideocalltocompareracetimesandannounceawinner.
Inbothtowns,theraceshavegrownintolargerfestivals.Olney'sfestivalisanall-dayeventstartingwithabigpancakebreakfast.Liberal'sfestivallastsfourdaysandincludesaparade,agreatshow,andeatingcompetitions.
Althoughthewomen'sraceisstillthemainevent,bothtownsnowholdracesforboysandgirlsofallages.EmmaEvans,14,wasthewinnerofheragegroup'sraceinLiberallastyear.Sheworeanapronthathergrandmamadeforherandusedapanpasseddowntoherfromherolderbrother.Herfamilycheeredheronfromthesidelines.
