involvetheinter-annual,andseasonaldynamicchangesofthesoilmoisture.Inthe
presentstudy,however,notonlydidweconsideredtheeffectsofthinningonthe
spatialandtemporaldynamicchanges,theinter-annualchanges,andseasonal
dynamicchangesofthesoilmoisture;butwealsoconsideredthechangesinsoil
hydrologicalresponseafterthinning.Ourgoalsweretounderstandthechangesinsoil
hydrologicalresponseandsoilmoisturedynamics,andtodeterminewhetherthinning
Picea
managementcaneffectivelyimprovethestateofsoilmoistureinthesubalpine
crassifoliaplantationsintheQilianMountains.
Third,theresearchpurposeandtheresultwerealsodifferent:
Themainly
purposeofthe“previousarticle”wastopreliminaryexplorethethinningonthe
plantationforestsoilmoisture,andtheyfoundthattheintermediatethinningcan
significantlyincreasesoilmoisturecontentatthedepthof60cm.However,they
didn'tpointoutthatwhichorwhatthethinningintensityorplantationdensitycanbe
benefittosustainabilityofplantedforestsinthesewater-limitedregions.Inthisstudy,
notonlywedidconfirmedthattheintermediatethinningcansignificantlyincrease
soilmoisturecontentatthedeepsoillayer,butwealsofoundthathighplanting
densitywasthemaincauseofseveresoilmoisturedeficitsinthelong-term,andit

investigatingtheeffectofthinningonthesoilhydrologicalresponse,wefoundthat
soilhydrologicalresponsemaybetemporarilymodifiedbythinningaccordingto

thecapacityforsoilinfiltration,andmoderatethinningintensitymaybeconduciveto
deepsoil-waterrecharge.Further,accordingtotheglobalcirculationprediction
modelsandtrendanalysisresultsandweatherpatterns,deepVSWCmayincreaseif
precipitationpatternsshifttoproducelargerbutlessfrequentrainfalleventsduring
thegrowingseason,andthischangewillbenefitgrowthofthevegetationplantedat
