oneisaboutReadingoutacrosstheocean,whichtellsusthecontactsbetweenChinaandAfrica.TheotherisaboutGoinghigh:

1.Columbus’sVoyages
Columbusmadefourvoyagestothewestbetween1492and1504inhisvainsearchforasearoutetoAsia.Themysteryofwhyhefailedtofindithaunted(萦绕在心头)himandfilledhimwithsadness.
Whereverhewent—toCuba,Puerto,Rico,Jamaica,SouthAmerica,Panama,downthecoastofCentralAmerica—itwasalwaysthesamestory.Insteadofgoldenpalaces,thereweregrasshutsandpalm-leaftents.Insteadofsilk-robbedmerchantprinces,hefound“Indians”whodidnothavesomuchasashirtontheirbacks.
WhenColumbusexploredtheWestIndiesin1493,heheardtalesofafierceIndiantribe(部落)whoreallydevoured(吞噬)itsdefeatedenemiesafterabattle.Thispeoplewascalledbymanynamesinthearea,includingCalina,Canima,Carib,CaribaandCaniba.ColumbusrecordedthenameoftheAmericannativesasCanibalesinSpanish,awordwhichcametorefer,withinafewyears,toanyeaterofhumanflesh.Inthesimilarfashion,thewordCaribbean,atitlefortheseaaswellasfortheregion,cameintoEnglish.
AttimesColumbusbecamereconciled(意见一致)tothetruththatthisnewlandwasnotChina,notJapan,nottheSpiceIslands.HeseemedtoacceptitasapartoftheearththatthegeographerstoEuropehadneverheardofbefore.Itwasanotherworld—andhecalleditexactlythat—butColumbusalsoinsisteduntilhediedthatthelandhehadreachedwasanunknownpartofAsia.
2.JamesCook
JamesCookwasagreatexplorer,whowassentbyEnglandtoexplorethePacificOcean.Beforehestartedexploring,mapsofthePacificOceanwerealmostempty.HevisitedhundredsofislandsacrossthePacificOceanandputtheminthecorrectplacesonthemap.HemademapsofthecoastlinesofAustraliaandNewZealand.JamesCookwasborninEnglandin1728.Hisparentswerepoorfarmworkers.WhenJameswas18,hefoundajobonacoastship.Heworkedontheshipuntilhewas27yearsold,andthenhejoinedthenavy.HefoughtineasterncoastofCanadainawaragainstFrance,andhemappedsomeoftheeasterncoastofCanada.In1768KingGeorgeⅢmadehimCaptainofashipandsenthimtothePacific.Hewasgonefornearlythreeyears.Whenhereturned,hewasregardedasanationalhero.
Hestartedhisthirdvoyagein1776.OnthistriphevisitedHawaii.HewasthefirstEuropeantosetfootonthisbeautifulisland.ThenhemappedthewesterncoastofNorthAmerica.AfterthathereturnedtoHawaii.UnfortunatelytherewassometroublebetweentheHawaiiansandthewhitemenandtheystartedfighting.IntheendCaptainCookwaskilledinaclashwiththelocals.
