I是can的过去式,表示过去有能力及过去存在的可能。
e.g.Hecouldn’tgothatday.那天他不能去。
(可能性)
Hecouldn’tanswerallthequestionswhenhewasapupil.不是所有的问题他都能回答。

II表示委婉地提法(现在时)
e.g.CouldIspeaktoMr.Zhang,please?
(电话里)请找张先生接电话好吗?
(3)表示吃惊。
e.g.Hecouldn’tbeathief.他不可能是个小偷。

他怎么会这么傻?
3.May
I表示允许
e.g.Youmaycomeherewheneveryoulike.你想什么时候来就什么时候来。
表示客气或委婉的请求用May,回答是也用May就显得冷淡。
所以最好改用热情的答语。
e.g.——MayIsmokehere?
我可以在这里吸烟吗?
——Yes,please./Certainly.可以./当然可以。
II表示不确定的推测
e.g.Shemayberight.她可能是对的。
4.might
I用在疑问句中,表示委婉、客气
Mightyoumakesomeroomforme?
您可以给我让点地方吗?
II作为may的过去式,表不确定的推测
e.g.Theythoughttheymightbethereontime.他们认为他们可以准时到达那里
5.must
I表示必须
e.g.youmustcomeearliernexttime.下次早点来。
在回答由must引导的一般疑问句时,若表示肯定,用must。
若表示否定,用needn’t或don’thaveto。
因为mustn’t表示禁止、不许可。
e.g.——Mustweallcometomorrow?
明天我们必须全部来吗?
——Yes,youmust./No,youneedn’t./No,youdon’thaveto.是的,必须全部来。
/不,没必要。
II表示很有把握的推测。
e.g.MissGaomustbeintheoffice.高老师一定在办公室里。
