“TheEndofSomething",byErnestHemingway,isashortstoryabouttwoyoungpeoplewhowitnesshowtimecanchangetheworldandthepeopleinit.Hemingwayusesthisstorytoconveyhowthischangehappensallthetime,andhoweverdesperatelyyouclingtothe"present",thepresentonlylastsforthatone,fleetingmomentyourealizeitisthere,thenitisgone,past,anditcanneverbepresentagain.Tounderstandthismessage,onemustlookatthewayHemingwaywritesthisstory,howheusesthebrokenmill,thefish'snotstriking,andthecharactersinthemselvestotellusastoryfarbeyondwhatweread.
ThebrokenmillrepresentsNickandMarjorie'sbrokenrelationship.Once,themillwasthecenterofalumberingtown,HortonsBay.Thetownwasaplacewithpeople,shops,andactivity.Inthepresentofthestory,themillliesdeserted,asdoesthetown,forthemillwaswhathadmadeHortonsBayatowninthefirstplace.Similarly,NickandMarjoriewereyoungeronce,youngerandmorecareless.Clearly,theyarenotold,butitseemsthatquiteafewyearshavepassedsincetheymet.Atthattime,theydidnothaveallthatmuchtothinkorworryabout,andtheirrelationshipflourished.Itisevidentthat,inthepresentofthestory,NickandMarjoriehavegrownapart.Theycannotrelateasmuchtoeachotheranymore,norcantheystayyoungforever,thustheweakfoundationoftheirrelationshipistorndownandleftinpieces.Forperhapstheiryouthwaswhatmadetheirrelationshipwhatitwas,justasthemillmadethetownwhatitwas.
AsNickandMarjorienowrowalongtheshore,theytrollforfish,buttheydonotgetany.Thefish'snotstrikingisasymbolofNick'slackofinterestintheirrelationship."'They'refeeding,'Marjoriesaid.'Buttheywon'tstrike,'Nicksaid."ThereareprobablythingsNickandMarjoriecoulddo,thereareprobablywaystheycouldtrytofixtheirrelationship,butNickhaslostinterest;thefishwillnotstrikeanymore,andloveisnotfunanymore.Theloveisthere,butithasceasedtoappealtoNick.Thegoodoldpastsimplyisn'tgoodenoughanymore.Marjorie,ontheotherhand,clingstowhatisleftandstillhopesforthebest."Marjoriedidnotreelinuntiltheboattouchedtheshore."Shedoesnotwanttogiveuponcatchingthosefish,andshedoesnotwanttogiveuponNick.
Inthisway,Hemingway,asthird-personnarrator,usesthecharacterstomakehispoint,aseachofthemrepresentseitherpast,present,orfuture.Marjorieispast;sheclingsonfordearlifetowhatwas,anddoesnotwanttoseethattheworldaroundherhaschanged.Shedescribesthemillasacastle:
agrandmonumentofherbelovedpast.Nickispresent;heisconfusedandhurtandrealizesthathecannotgoonlivinglikehedoes;hecannotgoonlivinginthepast,withMarjorie.Instead,helookstothefuture;Billisasymbolofwhatistocome,ofsomethingnew,ofsomethingbetter.
Thusthestoryendswithadifferentcouple;NickandBillareleftattheend,whereasMarjorietakestheboatandrowsherwayoutofthestory.Thepasthasbecomepast,therodsremainslack;thepastwillnotstrike.Forwhatwas,was,andwhatonemustfocusoniswhatis,now,andwhatistocome,tomorrow.ItisasHemingwayconveysthroughthisstory:
thepresentwillnotremainpresentforlong,andonemustlookbeyondwhatwasandlookatwhatisinordertobetrulyhappy.
