In1828,NoahWebsterpublishedthefirstAmericandictionary.HewantedtomakeAmericanEnglishdifferentfromBritishEnglish,sohechangedthespellingofmanywords.That’swhythewordscolour,centreandtravelerarespeltcolor,centerandtravelerinAmericanEnglish.Exceptforthesedifferencesinspelling,writtenEnglishismoreorlessthesameinbothBritishandAmericanEnglish.
