Althoughwemightbereluctanttobeawayfromhome,itisalwaysanexcitingmomentfullofhopeatthebeginningofanewsemester.Asforanewstartorthebeginningofanewphase,itisquitenaturalforustosetagoal,makeadetailedstudyingplanforgettingpreparationforourcareertoachieveourdream,ortobedeterminedtohaveadiettokeepfitanddatebravely,etc.
Allthesecanbesummarizedasexpectations.Expectationsareyourstronghopesandbeliefsthatsomethingwillhappenorthatyouwillgetsomethingthatyouwant.

GreatexpectationsbyCharlesDickens.Itisabookwiththemoralthemethataffection,loyalty,andconsciencearemoreimportantthansocialadvancement,wealth,andclass.Itisabooktalkingaboutambitionandself-improvement.
Intheyear1860,authorCharlesDickensbeganhisthirteenthnovel,GreatExpectations.Theworkisacoming-of-agenovel(教育小说),whichtellsthelifestoryofanorphanboynamedPip,whomuchlikeDickens’inhisearlieryearsisunhappywithhiscurrentlife.AnumberofCharlesDickens’personallifeeventsaremirroredinthenovel,leavingGreatExpectationstobeoneofhismostautobiographicalworks.
YoungPip,theprotagonistof(主人公)thenovelisstucklivinginthemarshcountry(沼泽地区),heisworkingajobthathehates,andconsidershimselftobetoogoodforhiscurrentsurroundings,muchlikeDickens’didwhenhewasyounger.Atheart,Pipisanidealist;wheneverhecanconceiveofsomethingthatisbetterthanwhathealreadyhas,heimmediatelydesirestoobtaintheimprovement.WhenheseesSatisHouse,helongstobeawealthygentleman;whenhethinksofhismoralshortcomings,helongstobegood;whenherealizesthathecannotread,helongstolearnhow.Pip’sdesireforself-improvementisthemainsourceofthenovel’stitle:
becausehebelievesinthepossibilityofadvancementinlife,hehas“greatexpectations”abouthisfuture.
Ambitionandself-improvementtakethreeformsin GreatExpectations—moral,social,andeducational;thesemotivatePip’sbestandhisworstbehaviorthroughoutthenovel.First,Pipdesiresmoralself-improvement.Heisextremelyhardonhimself(对自己苛刻)whenheactsimmorallyandfeelspowerfulguiltthatspurshimtoactbetterinthefuture.WhenheleavesforLondon,forinstance,hetormentshimself(自我折磨)abouthavingbehavedsowretchedlytowardJoeandBiddy.Second,Pipdesiressocialself-improvement.InlovewithEstella,helongstobecomeamemberofhersocialclass,and,encouragedbyMrs.JoeandPumblechook,heentertainsfantasiesofbecomingagentleman.Theworkingoutofthisfantasyformsthebasicplotofthenovel;itprovidesDickenstheopportunitytogentlysatirizetheclasssystemofhiseraandtomakeapointaboutitscapricious(变化无常)nature.GreatExpectationsisanovelwhichdevelopsanumberofdifferentthemesasthestoryprogresses,withtheprimarythemebeingpersonalgrowthandambition.Thestorytellsusthatmoralssuchasaffection,loyaltyandconsciencearemuchmoreimportantinrealitythansocial-class,socialadvancement,andwealth.Theprotagonist,Pip,isdestinedtolearnthislessonthroughhis‘greatexpectations’,asheexploresdifferentideasofambitionandself-improvement.
